My Enthusiasm And Potential To Become A Dentist

My interest in dentistry began with my fascination in the way that sciences interlink, which was apparent whilst studying entropy in Chemistry. With further learning I realized that entropy links to chemical reactions that occur within the human body. I was absorbed by this topic as this can be applied to evolutionary processes within the universe and is more challenging to compartmentalize. This links well to dentistry as it is constantly evolving and will always need continued professional development. I believe that my caring nature, my interest in science of the human body and my fine motor skills give me the necessary attributes to exceed in dentistry.

I shadowed NHS dentists and from there my interest grew, so I spent a day each with an endodontist and orthodontist. I helped the team with patient care, this was as simple as helping an elderly patient down the stairs. I saw how to deal with unexpected and challenging situations. I noticed the dentist kept calm, prioritizing the patient and communicating with them to maintain their confidence. I observed decontamination, processing of x-rays and reception duties where I learnt to appreciate the work beyond the surgery and recognize the importance of teamwork. With my additional reading I expanded my interest for dentistry, by completing a six week online ‘Discover Dentistry’ course run by the University of Sheffield. I found that prevention is more important than the treatment and this is a priority in dentistry.

I volunteered to take part in groundbreaking research in conjunction with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute on the tropical disease Trichuriasis. I identified new genes that could play an important role in the biology of the whipworm. This led me to reflect that despite not being at the sharp end of the project, I felt proud to be part of the research. As a result of this I learnt I was able to concentrate for long periods on small areas of detail, which is necessary for dentistry.

I did a week’s work experience at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in general medicine and plastic surgery. One of the surgical procedures required me, with the help of the surgeon, to map out the patient’s face and locate a melanoma. As a result of this I learnt that the planning of any procedure and obtaining valid consent is as important as the treatment. From all my placements I realized that healthcare is a collaborative effort and is all about teamwork. However, the aspect that stood out for me was the professional relationship that developed from seeing a patient on a regular basis, rather than just the diagnosis and referral. I valued being there for the patient journey. I am drawn to the practical element of my chosen career, as I have a long-standing interest in textiles. This involves detailed needlework and strategic planning of a final piece. A profession using practical skills alone did not interest me as I enjoy being involved in patient care and the relationship that ensues.

On a weekly basis, I visit an elderly lady suffering with dementia, during which I have learnt how to prompt her in a caring way, which prevents her from becoming embarrassed by her memory loss. I undertook a Sports Leadership Program and assisted a school’s science club, as part of completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Gold Expedition was arduous as it was undertaken during the ‘Beast from the East’! These experiences show my ability to interact, organize and lead people of all different ages which is an essential skill for a dentist. On top of this I have a part time job being responsible for children at a breakfast club. I communicate with parents and teachers to ensure the safeguarding of the children. I have learnt to be adaptable such as covering additional hours at short notice. From all my experiences combined, I believe that I have the enthusiasm and potential to excel in dentistry.
