My Four Pillars of National Honor Society
After being a part of the National Junior Honor Society in middle school and discovering the joy I found in helping others, just knowing I’m making an impact on at least one person, or many, brought me to the realization that I needed to challenge myself further. Seeing the second invite to become a member of the National Honor Society was not just a privilege but also an affirming moment that reminded me of the importance of perseverance and community service in my life. Crafting my NHS personal statement became an introspective journey, making me recognize that no matter the difficulties in life, I still should feel very accomplished and thankful that the NHS recognizes the hard work that not only I undergo but also, the hard work we students collectively undergo. I know if I were to be inducted into the organization that I would have unlimited opportunities and being its member will help enable me to develop both my professional and academic skills in social services. As I have many already, I feel I contribute well to being chosen to be inducted as my qualifications for the four pillars: character, leadership, service, and scholarship are overmet.
Leadership is one of the most important traits to not have only in school but through extracurriculars, at work, and even at home. In school, many can take the advantage of leadership by tutoring classmates or even staying after to help a teacher prep for the next class. By helping we are able to make students or other peers feel a sense of accomplishment and happiness for overcoming that obstacle in their work. One can also be a leader in clubs by making suggestions and using active listening skills. For example, I was a part of the choir council and saw that communication was low on the topic of making more profit from food courts. I was able to help give suggestions that enabled the choir to make double the profit towards new chairs for the classroom. In Young Life, I also made suggestions to make a video so students could visually see what Young Life is, after they showed many videos, we had brought in seven new freshmen which are amazing, as they are finding their path of knowing who Jesus is. I have participated in many events both in and out of school such as being one of the six sophomores chosen to go to the leadership conference an hour away for my strong leadership traits. I have also helped a nonprofit organization since the start with my mother to help build awareness for the mentally unstable. If I am accepted into the National Honors Society, I will be able to gain even more experience being a leader and help apply even more skills I have learned to my clubs, sports, and extracurriculars I am involved in. Not only will I apply what I have learned to my school-related activities but to my everyday life.
Along with leadership, I can strongly say that scholarship is next in the chain of the four pillars. With being a leader you could be great with communication and speaking for others but have the worst academic skills or even grades in this instance. So even though leadership is very important, scholarship is just as important. If you are capable of being both outgoing and able to make suggestions when you feel it is needed but to also back up with your academics you’d most likely be a great candidate for the NHS. I personally always try to make time for anything and everything as it keeps me motivated to keep pushing myself further. With work, chores, sports, extracurriculars, and helping friends and other students with work they may not recollect well, while also maintaining my own grades I feel I would be a great candidate. I have from what I can recall most of my school life always been in the honor roll and strive to keep it that way until I graduate. I always make it my goal to get all of my work in on time so I know future-wise i will have nothing to catch up on. If I am selected I solemnly promise I will not fall behind in school but instead use this as motivation to keep myself from falling in that deep dark hole. But to also not forget what the importance is of being a scholar and to know my limits with outside distractions.
Next, is the pillar of service. I have been aware since middle school when I was accepted into the National Junior Honor Society that it is a service organization. Not only will there be activities to help our school but our community as a whole. When it comes to the National Honor Society my love is so strong for this organization because everything us students do is for free when we give service to others. I feel they do this because we should feel happiness from something that isn't a sliver of green paper with a number. But to find our good service skills in just being happy to help others with a kind heart. I feel with service you have to be kind no matter what and be there for the people who aren't for those of need. For example, I always helped my aunt feed the homeless at homeless shelters and help clean businesses with my mother. Seeing the faces of those kids and the hardworking people who run these businesses brings me so much joy to know I'm making a change so they can have a better day and know they are not alone. If I were to be accepted I would have more opportunities to help those of need and overall just feel grateful for what I have.
Finally the last pillar, character, this is something I feel I have a lot of. To me having a great character means you are outgoing, always honest, very positive no matter the circumstance, respectful, and always reliable and trustworthy. For example, in soccer we were down in the score and kept pushing and telling the girls we got this and to not let two goals ruin our game. We kept our heads up and by the second half, we were up by three and won at the end of the game. With being confident and being able to keep that positivity and courage you can do anything. If I were to be accepted I know I would improve my character even more because there's always room to improve and it gives me the opportunity to learn from other hard-working students who apart of the NHS and be influenced by their mindset on how I can become an even better citizen.
If I were to be accepted into the National Honor Society it would be groundbreaking. Not only to know i achieved something I've dreamed of being in since middle school but to know it will only benefit me even more. I will get to work on the four pillars. I will have the chance to meet other students who work just as hard as me. I will get to help others all around my community who are in need. I will be able to keep motivated on how to maintain my grades.
