My Goal To Study Sociology In Order To Create Fresh Insight Into Social Issues
I have found that my relationship with Sociology has influenced my perception and understanding of society in a remarkable way, I find myself being put in a position in which I can analyse and seek to describe the way in which society collaborates. The topics within sociology often leave me frustrated and defeated, and since studying gender inequality, my whole viewpoint of contemporary society has changed. The gender pay gap for full-time workers is still entirely in favour of men; for all occupations, and this frightens me. My intrigue about such processes and everyday conflicts allows me to ask why this is happening and Sociology provides an excellent platform for this. I wish to expand on my knowledge on societies inequalities, and though I expect to be infuriated and angered by what I discover, I'm excited to see where my passion for this subject takes me.
My current studies in Psychology and English Language are particularly engaging and complement my work in Sociology excellently. In Psychology we review beliefs, examine their validity and document their fallacies. I find it an advantageous subject because it is something I constantly have to keep on top of regarding revision and consolidation, therefore I’ve learnt skills such as organisation and time management that will be invaluable to my proposed undergraduate studies. By attempting and researching ways to describe how and why people speak the way they do, English Language has enthralled me the past academic year. Both these subjects have given me transferable skills and help me view sociology from multiple angles. Everything I learn in the classroom, I constantly attempt to apply to the real world and I believe it is this way of thinking that has given me a competitive edge.
As a keen learner, I am an enthusiastic reader. I recently read ‘We should all be feminists’ By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and was astounded. I believe this to one of the most convincing discussions I’ve ever read on feminism. It does not point fingers and blame men for a the cultural mind-set they were born into. Instead, it offers a calm logical argument for positive change going forward. And that’s what I think the world needs. Interestingly, whilst reading, I found a lot of this knowledge was not foreign to me due to my existing engagement in sociology, however, I was still left with so many questions unanswered. For over a year, I have held a challenging part-time job in a fast food chain, which is both physically and mentally demanding. Despite the challenges, I have gained excellent social skills and financial independence along with the ability to respectfully interact with customers from all walks of life. I enjoy surrounding myself with communities that offer so much insight into life with prejudice. In 2017 I attended a Brighton Gay Pride event, a celebration of being whoever you are and whoever you want to be, the parade was an amazing way to demonstrate such inclusivity, I found it a very humbling experience to walk amongst such strong characters.
The discussion of inequality is so relevant and so pertinent in contemporary UK, everyday we have a break through with gender imbalance, or a setback with ethnic inequality, I find it near impossible to not consider the sociology in everyday life. I believe I can combine my passion and knowledge to create fresh insight into social issues for I am someone who takes a critical view on common assumptions that many people will idly accept.
