My Interest In Studying Architecture

Architecture is an integration of expertise in both technicality and creativity. Based on this, I decided to choose three subjects that compliment these skills: Physics, Maths and Fine Art. These A levels can be combined, which became apparent to me during an art examination, in which I had to use trigonometric calculations in order to successfully construct a miniature wooden building.

During Year 12, I attended a Cambridge master class on the History of Art in which Dr Frank Salmon discussed the concept of symmetrical architecture which further alarmed my interest in intricate and repetitive patterns. Having frequently observed the Victorian attributes of the Houses of Parliament, it has stimulated my desire to learn more about the architectural nature of Victorian buildings. This era has left its fingerprints on a number of my favourite monumental landmarks in London, including the Natural History Museum.

Alternatively, I see Architecture as an embodiment of human evolution. My interest in this concept has stemmed from my view that aspects of advancement may often be unnoticeable during a short time period but over a long period of history we are able to see how our urban environment changes and develops. It takes a significant amount of time for style to evolve and therefore there is enough space for people to adapt to it, eventually resulting in two buildings from juxtaposing eras appearing to be matchable.

Personally, I believe that designing and constructing a series of 3D work is what helps to keep my creative thoughts and ideas flowing. Whilst in the past I used to believe architecture was based on three fundamental processes; the idea, the plan and the implementation, now my perception of Architecture has changed. I have engulfed myself in a studio based environment, allowing me to gain experience from two accredited architects. Additionally, I had the opportunity to become an associate of a team of architects in the Martin Drahovský studio, which involved me using my skills to arrange an exhibition in honour of Jozef Maliňák’s work.

This allowed me to further develop my knowledge of spatial design, as I had the opportunity to document the event. Also, this experience taught me the significance of teamwork, and how cooperation can create an outstanding final outcome. The following year, I started my internship as a PR manager with Andrea Klimko architects. She introduced me to the 'Women Architects' community which I was effectively promoting and helped to expand. This association is focused primarily on the matter of the gender equality issue in the world of architecture.

It supports and encourages female architects to be confident and strive with their ideas, in order to enforce equality and recognition. I hope to encourage young women who are interested in this field to also pursue their careers in architecture. In my role I will continue to focus on publishing informative blog posts regarding the world of architecture from a female's perspective .This aspiration of mine also emerged from Dr Frank Salmon’s lecture. He also questioned why there have not yet been any 'great' female artists. This comment motivates me greatly, as an ambitious female who intends to study a degree, in which art plays a major role.

Moreover , growing up in a significantly smaller community in Slovakia enabled me to have the opportunity to strengthen my sense of creativity through attending the local music and art school from an early age. I have developed a positive competitive spirit through partaking in various communicative sports, to include Tennis and Badminton. Ultimately, whilst Architecture is a course that involves and encourages individuality, I believe it is also a field of study that will require me to work collaboratively. It would be an absolute honour to immerse myself in the study of Architecture, as I hope to develop my artistic abilities in order to help further shape the world we live in today.
