My Motivation To Get A Degree In Criminology

Criminology to me, is one of the most intrinsic and interesting subjects in modern day culture. It tells the story of crime and how society reacts to crime. I want to study criminology because i wish to gain a better understanding of why criminals do the things they do, knowing it is wrong, I am specifically interested in crimes that show such a high level of cruelty and how the people who commit these crimes are so oblivious to morality. My interest in criminology first emerged when I was watching a show, American horror story season five. In this season the story is based around a hotel filled with traps and confusing architecture designed to deceit its guests into getting lost and trapped. I was curious to know if this was a true story and so I used the internet to do some research and lo and behold it was. I found a documentary called “Murder hotel: The story of America’s first serial killer”. I watched it and was forevermore intrigued, this was when I decided I wanted to study criminology.

A degree in criminology can lead to very exciting and yet diverse careers, I feel this would be a perfect fit for me as I like trying new things. My career aspirations are specifically linked into the study of criminology and I feel studying this subject would give me a substantial advantage in the career I want. The study of criminology is a very public subject it does not just contain the study of crime but also the study of society and how crime affects our society. My volunteering experience at the Sunderland voluntary life brigade for the past 2 years shows that I am more than suited working in the public service sector. I am a search and rescue team member and when I am out on training exercises the public try to see what is going on and some try to get involved, however this is not allowed, and part of my job is preventing altercations between us and the public.

I believe that the skills I have gained from my volunteering makes me an ideal candidate for a degree in the criminology field. My time at the brigade has been exciting and unpredictable but at the same time it has helped me to develop myself and the skills in which I possess. I am particularly good at problem-solving, adaptability and teamwork. My senior captain within my search and rescue team allows each member of the team to lead a training exercise in order to boost their confidence and leadership skills. I conducted a search exercise in which I guided a group of individuals towards a hidden dummy by using grid references and maps.

I have only wanted to study criminology for the past year however I am very passionate about the subject, I am studying a level 3 BTEC in applied science. I decided to study the forensic route as it gives me an insight into the world of crime and how criminals think. I have learned a lot and what interests me the most is the process in which the criminal commits the crime to the criminal being prosecuted and sentenced. The field of forensics shares similarities from the field of criminology, I feel this will give me a significant insight into the subject that other students may not have before beginning their undergraduate degree.

I believe the skills I have developed over the last few years from my college course and from my voluntary experience have readily prepared me for a degree in the field of criminology. I will be able to put all these skills developed together and put them towards a subject I am passionate about.
