My Motivation To Study A Multidisciplinary Studies Degree
I chose MDS because I thought it would be a great idea to learn about three minors that I’m fascinated in rather than doing one major. Since I kept changing my major every semester & wasn’t sure what I wanted to major in, my advisor recommended me to major in MDS, so I can take a couple of classes for my minor and explore what I’m most fascinated with. I also decided that MDS would be a great fit for me because then I could learn more about 3 subjects I’m passionate about.
I’ve always wanted to work with kids since I was younger, so I knew if I minored in things I ‘were more interested in, it’d be much easier for me. I also feel like MDS is a great fit for me because a major that allows me the freedom of having a broad scope of knowledge, and a minor that focuses on what I love. The benefits of having a minor are it increases the chances of you getting employed, it looks great on your resume and allows you to be an expert on more than one subject. The three minors that I’m taking are sociology, communications, and child development family studies. These three minors are alike each other. Communication is any way to exchange feelings between two or more people and basic human relationship component. Some communications skills would be active listening, asking questions, providing feedback, clarifying and summarizing, respect empathy, etc.
Sociology provides tools to understand how and why our society functions, the impact of genial concepts on individual lives and the obstacles of human interaction and society. It helps us understand society and why people think the way they believe and why they do what they choose. Sociology offers a distinctive and enlightening way of visually perceiving and understanding the convivial world in which we live in and which shapes our lives. A couple of skills of sociology that you might need are reading and writing skills, research skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills, open-mindedness, and patience.
Child development family studies is a course that prepares you to get ready to work with children and families that are in challenging situations. This course concentrates on topics such as cognitive, social, physical, child care professions, emotional development of children as facilitated by families, etc. Child development is important because observing and monitoring child development is an essential device to make sure that adolescents meet their developmental milestones. Some advantages are improved social skills, improved attention spans, better performances in grade school and enthusiasm for lifelong learning. Minoring in child development family studies can prepare you to get a job at a daycare facility, caseworker, nursery schools, elementary schools, family planning agencies & many other places. After my undergraduate studies, I want to be able to open my daycare. My communications minor will help me talk to the parents & try to solve problems when the children aren’t listening. My sociology minor will help me understand why children misbehave the way they do and give them a little emotional support if they are wrong & let them know right from wrong. Finally, my child development family studies minor will help me comfort young children’s social and emotional disabilities.
Minoring in three different minors has given me the opportunity to dive into a wide range of fields. With the many ways to stand out when applying for jobs, graduate school or professional school, having a three minor could be one of them. Taking on the challenge of several extra courses helps me get determined, take initiative and teaches me how to handle the additional workload. I believe that MDS is where passion reflects well in the workplace.
