My Views On Education And Teaching Philosophy

Merriam Webster’s definition of education is “the action or process of educating or of being educated. ” But I believe that education is more than that, education to me is not only teaching students the basics of school. It is teaching students how to interact with one another, how to respect other people’s cultures and beliefs. School to me is a process of shaping a child to be a good human being and teaching them what they need to grow.

What Education Should Be

Education should be a place where children go to learn as much as possible. Education should provide the child the materials they need to be a well-rounded student and a well-rounded member of society. It should be goal-oriented, there should be set goals for every child. If the child exceeds the goal, then you set new ones for them. The point is for the child to pass milestones in their educational path to better themselves and to move forward in their curriculum.

Teachers should have high expectations for each student. If a student does not meet the expectation, then try a different approach for them, don’t discourage your student because they aren’t where the other students are. You should guide them in the right direction, whether it is needing an aide to help or finding other ways to teach them. Lastly, education should be organized and not all over the place, if you don’t know where you are going with the curriculum, then your students don’t know either, don’t set your kids up for failure. Have a well thought out an organized plan.

What School Should Be

I believe that school should be a safe place for the children. I know that in some situations school is a break from the children’s home life. Sometimes children are being neglected or abused at home and school is the one place where they can just be themselves. I want school to be a place where the students can escape and have fun learning and making friends. School should be a place where students are encouraging and helping build up one another. I want school to be somewhere that they won’t dread going, I want school to be a place that they are excited to go to. I think should school be focused more on the students learning how to think for themselves and them learning the content in their own way rather than focused on the content being taught and everyone having to learn the curriculum in the same way that might not work for everyone. School should be fun, I want my students to remember school as an exciting time in their life, filled with memories that will last a lifetime.

What the Curriculum Should Include

I think that the kids should be taught the basics (math, reading, writing, science and social studies. ) But I also believe that they should be taught music, art and gym, and maybe a foreign language. Growing up in a bilingual household Spanish was easy for me, I can understand Spanish perfectly without a problem, but I have a hard time talking in Spanish. I took 3 years of Spanish in high school to try to improve the way I talk but it was hard. I am teaching my son Spanish right now because he’s so little he will absorb all the information. The best time to teach a foreign language is when they are young because their minds are still curious, their brains are still growing, and they are learning at a faster pace.

I believe that my curriculum will help students in the long run because they will need to know the basics to be able to move to the next grade. I think that being taught music, art and gym will help expand their love of music and the arts, they might find out that they love to exercise and they might find a sport that they are good at.

What Methods Are Used

The methods I plan on using are projects, drawing and writing assignments, crafts, songs or rhymes, and group work so learning by doing. I plan on teaching either preschool, kindergarten, or first grade, so there wouldn’t be things like power points or essays because they are so little, I want my classroom to be student-based. I want all my students to have a way that helps them learn. Things like having fun projects or activities that are related to the subject, so my students have a better understanding of what I am trying to teach them I think will benefit their comprehension. I personally do best with hands on activities rather than just sitting and being talked to. That is just how I learn, and I know that everyone is different and that’s why I have a variety of different methods, so it can probably suit every student.

Between work my students will have time to play and get out energy because after a while of sitting down and doing work they will probably get antsy. Children that are in preschool through 2nd grade have a hard time focusing on just work all day, it just isn’t in their nature, they’re curious and have a million questions and want to get up and use their senses to explore the world around them. I think there should be teacher aides too, just because there is so many students, it would be hard to get to answer every question and get to everyone that needed help. When I observed a kindergarten class almost every child had a question or needed help to get something done and if I wasn’t there it would have taken the whole class time trying to help with every question that they had.

I don’t think I would do a lot of homework, maybe something like a 3-4 page packet that is given on a Monday and is asked to be finished on Friday and read 20 minutes a day. I wouldn’t do so much homework because you never know how a student’s home life is. Some children go home and have no food, or no electricity, parents that physically or mentally abuse them, addict parents or they have to go home and take care of their siblings. Teachers only know so much and I don’t want a child having to worry about being in trouble at school for not finishing a homework assignment every day. Growing up I watched my older sisters go through tough situations and I would watch their kids stress at very young ages because they had homework the next day that they knew they couldn’t get done. We would try to help them, but there were times where we couldn’t get things done and they would cry because they would get in trouble with their teacher.

What Is the Purpose of Education

The purpose of education is to open every child’s mind and give them knowledge to prepare them for the world. You are giving children the things they need to grow and develop to become a member of society. You are influencing the children that will one day grow up and become adults in the real world. The purpose of education is to educate the youth and give them the resources so they can succeed in their own way.
