Mysterious, Romantic, Tragic, and Serious Atmosphere in Phantom of the Opera
In the phantom of the opera, there is a dark ambiance is present in a lot of the film. It's very dark and witch-like with all the candles and the fog. Erik Erik otherwise known as the phantom is the tragic tutelar character that wears half of a mask on his face where his face is physically distorted. Erik Erik is described as a villain or a tragic hero in The Phantom of the Opera. Erik ends up falling in love with the female character Christine Daae, but his feelings are displayed in a bit harmful and destructive manner. These acts include sabotaging performances and taking Raoul captive. Erik is childish and often shows he is used to getting things his way.
Christine Daae is the main female protagonist in The Phantom of the Opera, Christine is originally from Sweden. Her mother died when she was young then her father, with whom she had a close relationship with, died a few years later. Christine got her passion of music from her father, and from there she told her tales of angel music. Eventually, Erik convinces Christine that he is an angel of music and is thus able to gain her trust. Christine is also the love interest of both Erik and Raoul, which end sup causing a lot of the conflict in the play.
The atmosphere in The Phantom of the opera is described as mysterious, romantic, tragic, and serious there is also a bit of mythic quality to the play. The lighting is very dark with blue lights and many candles to give it that mysterious yet romantic atmosphere. This play in based in the 1800s in Paris. In this time period their clothes were very elegant and classical period looking. With the Phantom having a cloak, mask, and gloves he has a very dark mysterious vibe to him, which is the look they were going for, so they portrayed it very nicely. Whereas Christine’s clothing is a beautiful white kind of cream-colored dress with a corset design top to it.
A scene that really stuck out to me is the boat scene where Christine is setting in the front of the boat and Erik is behind her using a large paddle to get them through the water. The fog and candles really set the mood for that scene making it romantic and spooky at the same time almost like a romantic Halloween ride at a carnival. In this scene, he holds his hand out to her and she slowly reaches it, as he leads her down a corridor of arms holding candles in the walls. The candlelight against their faces gives the play a soft almost tender moment between Christine and Erik. They then come to a black horse and Christine gets on it while Erik leads the horse. Erik then helps her off the horse and onto the small boat.
In conclusion, this play is beautifully amazing, the characters are a perfect balance of light and dark. The Phantom of the Opera was played very well by the actors. They really captured the dark mysterious yet romantic and mythic side of the play. The lighting was a beautiful blue making it have an almost underwater effect to it. The music is very pleasant to the ear. And the last scene where Raoul leaves the monkey music box on Christine’s grave, then Raoul saw the rose with a black ribbon tied around it with the ring the phantom gave Christine. Raoul knew that they truly loved each other.
