Philosophy Applied: Finding Meaning in Daily Life
To have morals is one thing, to have ethics is another, but to be a human with raw feelings and raw emotions is a whole different ball game. When trying to be the best person you tell yourself you can be is consistently being tested and threaten morals and ethics often leaves the building. This is philosophy in everyday life essay in which this topic is considered.
The world today as I know it is quite stressful. Let’s just say it’s not an easy road being a young minority in our beautiful country right now. I love positivity, I preach it, I feel it, I channel is, I am it... at least I try to be. I wake up every morning with a plan. One philosophical saying that I live by is “You are the author of your life” meaning I control the narrative of my life and how it turns out. I write my own story. When I wake up in the morning I say to myself “Today I’m going to be nicer than I was yesterday, I am going to be more honest, respectful, thoughtful of those around me”, sadly because of my beautiful coarse curly hair and deep caramel skin I am forced to disregard my morning affirmations and sarcastically education those I come in contact with more often than I would like to about what it is to be me in our beautiful country.
When I think of the American dream, I think of all the possibilities afforded to myself and others who are not native to American soil and we’ve got the chance to a proper education that’s flawed it’s terrible honestly, but we are grateful. We’ve got the chance to get a good-paying job and the opportunity to someday with the grace of God to own a car or even a house.
For me, philosophy is much more important than some anciently famous philosopher whose work in today’s society means nothing. The popular idea of philosophy is that its just an academic discipline involving arguments and esoteric forms of reasoning
Philosophy is a set of ideals, standards, or beliefs used to describe one’s behavior or thoughts. For many people studying philosophy is meant to give us a “new way of life”
How will I use philosophy in my everyday life and work? Well, I believe it’s already being implemented in my life every time a decision is made philosophy is one of the main components. It helps us to solve our problems and make better decisions by developing our critical thinking which is very important in today’s societies of fake news and disinformation. Philosophy is used when we read books, do the math, participate in plays and theater arts, and many more. Philosophy goes beyond what is thought to us in schools. Ancient Greek influence on the western world is the standard of learning in our country.
In class, we were able to learn so much from each other and the readings we had each week and the open discussion from every one where we all felt comfortable enough to give our own opinions were wonderful for me. Philosophy allows us to have a dialog with contrastive criticism where we can agree to disagree for the better good. Hearing my classmates disgust their view on various topics allowed me to place myself within the shoes of others which gave a different outlook on our various discussions.
What can we learn from philosophy? Well not only does it teach critical thinking, but it also teaches us to read clearly, to understand the text and the meaning of what we’ve read to grasp the lesson that’s often hidden deep inside of the words. Philosophy teaches us to write clearly to use logical thinking and analyze whatever situation presents itself. Philosophy doesn’t just tell us what to believe rather it helps to improve our thinking and our ability to be reasonable. When I am in a situation where someone wants to engage in derogatory arguments and unfulfilling arguments philosophy help to assure that poor argument will lower the impact on my beliefs and what I stand for as a human being.
I find myself asking what is my life’s purpose. Philosophy brings this important question I have for myself to the table and gives me the tools toward finding an answer for myself. I haven’t quite found it yet but that only shows that I need to expand my horizons in this crazy thing we call life. Philosophy has many benefits to my life we all use it every day to better ourselves and to also better those around us
