Providing Justice To The People – The Purpose For Me To Study Law

Growing up in a small town of Bangladesh I have seen first-hand effects of a corrupt legal system, inequality and discrimination. Offenders often get away with crime and the wide gap between rich and poor makes it almost impossible for poor people to hire a lawyer and therefore they can hardly access to the justice system. Girls are raped, killed and victims of domestic violence who rarely get justice as there is hardly anyone to help. I want to help people like them who need legal aid and seek justice where fairness is above what money cannot buy and no one is disfavoured. I want to provide humanitarian, incorruptible and lawful service to the general public because for me law is not just about advocating or practicing in Court, it is about the connection with clients, providing justice to the people and making a difference to communities in a realistic manner with a fair legal system.

My first trip to the Crown Court greatly influenced my desire to study law further. I got the opportunity to see how the legal process actually works and observed some appeal cases from Magistrate Court which helped me to become more familiar with legal reasoning, sentencing and rulings of cases. It was fascinating to see lawyers’ giving critical arguments with relevant evidence and questioning witnesses and defendants. I also had the chance to ask the judge about his experience in the courtroom. I visited Magistrate Court to see more cases which helped me to strengthen my awareness of criminal liability and court proceedings. These experiences brought the theoretical knowledge I developed in the classroom to life.

While studying Applied Law I have learned different concepts of law in depth such as aspects of legal liability, law making system and dispute solving. In my course units I have given reports and written evaluative essays where I have illustrated critical analysis and evaluation skills which I believe helped me to be well prepared for the degree I am applying for. I thrive on evaluating defendants and proving points through logical explanation. Through Maths and Business I have broaden my problem solving, analytical and interpreting skills which will help me a lot in my course, for instance understanding cases and theories. I have developed the knowledge of social and economic issues while studying the business environment.

I had a taste of working in a solicitor firm where I recently performed legal administrative duties and insight into different perspective of law. The work involved filing, answering calls, surveys for clients and also got the opportunity to read clients’ cases which familiarised me with legal documents and legal process. Working with experts I have learned how to deal with clients and work in under pressure which enhanced my confidence when interacting with people which will be helpful to balance my social and academic life at university and workplace in the future. I am a volunteer of Trees for Cities where I get to involve planting and watering trees. I am a student ambassador in my college and also volunteered in Plaistow Youth Market. Through volunteering I have acquired insights about myself and people, gained skills of challenging work which helped me to gain sense of responsibility and hopefully I can make positive contributions to the university. I have a great interest in learning new languages. I am fluent in five languages and self teaching a sixth. I personally think that being able to speak in different languages can be beneficial for a lawyer when it comes to interacting with clients from different backgrounds. In my free time I enjoy reading and painting which has developed my academic performance, creativity and critical thinking skills. My other activities include playing badminton, basketball and swimming.

I believe I can contribute true passion and dedication in my course to extend the knowledge and skills in more depth that I have gained throughout my academic life.
