Reflection On Cranes Brinton’s Anatomy Of Revolurion

Goal Setting

My discussion based goals are to make clear accurate statements and to make sure that all research is done is correct because we are trying to see how the Haitian revolution will follow the Cranes Brinton’s Anatomy. My first goal will be achieved by speaking loudly enough that everyone can hear me. My second goal will be achieved by making strong claims and provide strong evidence that corresponds. I am choosing this goal because it will help me succeed in public discussions and other summits that we will have. My goal is SMART because I will be very specific when making statements and all my statements will be made from the information that I attained from my findings, showing how the Haitian revolution follows the Cranes Brinton’s anatomy. It is measurable because we can see if my classmates understand the information and it is relevant because important information will be spoken.

Goal Reflection

Throughout the Summit I did complete my goal, and it was a lot easier to complete it since there was only one other person in my group. Brisa and I were really going into detail since we had a lot of time to talk about the Haitian revolution and the Mexican Revolution. Furthermore, I still spoke loud enough so my tablemate can hear me and the claims that I made had evidence to back up. We went through our stage multiple times so each of us made sure we had a good understanding of what has happened. We both had questions for each other, and we definitely had a very sufficient summit. After we were done sharing we both summarized each other’s revolutions to make sure we had a great understanding which helped me know that I need a great job explaining since she summarized it really well.

Pre-Summit Reflections

Stage 1 in the Cranes Brinton’s anatomy is when the land is being ruled by incautious rulers and increased antagonism between the social classes which caused a rebellion. In the French colonies, the economy was broken up into different classes which “dedicated people’s place in society and Jobs” people who were born in Spain were mostly considered in the top class which was known as the white colonists, who owned most of the property. Below them were the gens de color libre which included light skinned and dark skinned. Although they were members of free and educated propertied class, the system blocked them from participating in many public offices. The lower class of this colonial society consisted of slaves, who were people that originated in Africa. The issue of race and inequality was very complex. The economy was held mostly by slaves. Without slaves, the agriculture would not have been so rich and the production of sugar and coffee would be low, which means “most of the population resented the domination of European colonial powers”. So many slaves were encountered that “Nearly 500 thousand enslaved Africans worked on French plantations, and they outnumbered their masters drastically”. The number of slaves encountered were all beaten and punished if they weren’t working. Slaves weren’t considered as humans but more as things because they had been beaten by their masters and they outnumbered them, then tension was made and the thought of revolution had stirred since the upper classes did not want the slaves receiving any freedom.

Stage 5 in Cranes Brinton’s anatomy has to do with leaders attempting to end a revolt using violence. Furthermore, this happens during the Haitian revolution when the French send 30,000 troops to Saint-Domingue to stop Toussaint LOuverture, the slave army general. This is a showing that the government is prepared to use violence since they send these troops and have them sanctioned at the island. Furthermore, the French did this “to remove Toussaint from power” and during this, they make a deal that if he will stop the revolution the French will abolish slavery. When the troops were sent they eventually capture LOuverture and send him to prison. This also shows how the government is prepared to use violence. The reason for this was that “the French soon accused him (LOuverture) of planning another uprising”, meaning that LOuverture was either going to form another act of rebellion. During his time in prison, LOuverture passes away. Furthermore, this was an act of violence by the French because they are using force to quell by bringing troops to Haiti, imprisoning Toussaint and showing Haiti their power of the vast troops they have. Post-Summit Paragraphs All the revolutions we learned about during the summit had followed all the stages however, the Haitian revolution was the closest that followed stage one the best. During the Haitian revolution economy was doing well since the slaves were able to produce so much coffee and sugar in the plantations. In these French colonies, the slaves were treated harshly and “French masters used brutal methods to terrorize and keep the natives powerless.

Furthermore, this shows that other classes also did not want the slaves to have any power which began to cause tension between the classes since slaves were working so hard they wanted to be free. Something similar to this happened during the French revolution because the economy was also doing well but France alone was in debt because of poor leader actions. In order to fix this problem the king wanted to tax the poor which caused antagonism between the classes since “lands held by the nobility are taxed very little, and lands held by commoners are taxed heavily”. This shows that the “commoners” were taxed heavily and the rich were taxed so little. Cranes Brintons Theory is based on the French revolution and the Haitian revolution is inspired by the French which shows that it would best follow this theory. In stage 5 the during the Haitian revolution the French send 30,000 troops “to remove Toussaint from power”. When the French do this to “remove him from power’” this shows that the main purpose of doing this was to capture Toussaint and remove him from power because “the French soon accused him (LOuverture Toussaint) of planning another uprising”. This is showing that the government is prepared since they sanctioned all these troops at the island, and was able to remove him from power. They put him in jail and make since they believed that he prepared another “uprising” and made a deal with him that if he would abolish this revolution the French would abolish slavery. Furthermore, this was an act of violence by the French because they are using force to quell by bringing troops to Haiti, imprisoning Toussaint and showing Haiti their power of the vast troops they have.

Final Project Reflection

Crane Brinton’s Anatomy was a cycle in which the revolutions from 1700 to 1800s, followed. Furthermore, in this anatomy of revolution, there are 8 stages that each revolution will follow. This is an accurate theory and should be used to educate students about the revolution since it followed all the revolutions during this time precisely. Throughout the French revolution stages 1 and 5 of Brinton’s theory happen, providing a precise and accurate theory. During the French revolution stage 1 of Britons theory occurs when the land is being ruled by “impotence leaders”. One of the leaders “Louis le Bien-Aime”, when he continued to rule “damaged foreign relations and caused financial problems in France by overspending” (Isabella). This shows that after Louis xiv and Louis xv overspent their money, that when Louis xvi became leader France was in debt from all the money spent that they were taxing the poor instead of the rich which caused tension between the classes. In the 5th stage of the Brinton's theory King Louis, was an “incumbent leader” and was threatening to attack the newly made national assembly. Many rumors were going around that nobles were going to use their power to kill and terrorize peasants. After the third estates vote the “king sends his mercenary around the Versailles to threaten the third estate”. The cause of all these rumors was that “some people suggested that his intent was to use military force to dismiss the National Assembly”. The French fall in into panic and respond with violence. After this a mob of rebels took over the Bastille, and this is when “a wave of senseless panic rolled through France”. This was a “wave of senseless panic” since the French thought the king would enforce the military and place and army in Versailles. The Haitian Revolution develops in 1791 where the government prevents revolution through violence, and class antagonism occurs. In the French colonies, the economy was broken up into different classes which “dedicated people’s place in society and Jobs”. The Haitian revolution was broken up into social classes. The white colonists, gens de color libre which they had some freedom but they were not allow to participate in public office voting, and the lower class which was based off of slaves.

The issue of race and inequality was very complex. The upper class did not want slaves receiving any freedom. The number of slaves encountered were all beaten and punished if they weren’t working. Slaves weren’t considered as humans but more as things because they had been beaten by their masters and they outnumbered them, then tension was made and the thought of revolution had stirred, since the upper classes did not want the slaves receiving any freedom. In stage 5 during the Haitian revolution the French had send 30,000 troops “to remove Toussaint from power”. When the French do this to “remove him from power’” this shows that the French are capable of taking and getting to someone they want. The main purpose of doing this was to capture Toussaint and remove him from power because “the French soon accused him (LOuverture Toussaint) of planning another uprising”. Brinton’s theory adequately follows all the revolutions from 1700 to 1800, and should be used to teach students about the revolutions from 1700 to 1800 since it has a very specific structure. `
