Course That Stimulates The Mind: What I Learned In Psychology Class
Psychology is a course that not only stimulates the mind but helps one to better understand their own life and to be more aware of the mind of others. It gives a more intellectual and educational view on human behavior and the reason why we go about things in a certain manner. During General Psychology, there were several imperative topics that were covered that provided beneficial information. The chapter topics that were discovered more in depth were what is psychology, learning and conditioning, motivation, theories of personality and approaches to treatment and therapy. In "What I Learned In Psychology Class Essay" I want to share the reflection on what I liked most and the least while providing feedback that can better assist for the next students that are entering this course.
The thing that stood out the most during this course is the actually meaning of psychology and how it is broken down to a “T” while being supported with research evidence. Psychology is a study that has been conducted that informs on how the human mind operates. Because psychology is a science, it attempts to investigate the causes of behavior using systematic and objective procedures for observation, measurement and analysis, backed-up by theoretical interpretations, generalizations, explanations and predictions. In order to thoroughly understand, it causes one to use critical thinking skills in order to look at things in a different way than we normally would. Critical thinking is one of many vital skills that learners must develop in order to be successful in whatever we set our minds to. These courses are only assigned to help and further expand the knowledge of each student, therefore, I cannot say that I disliked any topic or information that was given. However, I can say that there is just not enough time in the course to learn everything that I would like to know. Psychology is a topic that is so important and it will be a great help to not only knowing myself but those around me.
Another topic we learned about that I liked is motivation. According to the text in chapter 12 of the PowerPoint, Motivation refers to a process within a person or animal that causes that organism to move: toward a goal or away from an unpleasant situation. Motivation is a well-known word that I do not take lightly because it is that very thing that keeps me going to push through hard times and any obstacle to reach my goal. So often we here this loosely used word but do not know the effect behind it to actually properly use it. Some effect of motivation on work that I learned was even with motivation, in order to be successful, one must have self-control, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and self-fulfilling. All of these factors are a part of the mind because if you don’t believe in yourself and show that you really want something, no one else will.
Overall, this course was good because it provided beneficial information. Since psychology is a topic that will follow students for the rest of their life, I could suggest implementing interactive assignment that allows scholars to interact with one another in order to better stimulate the brain. It could be as simple as discussion that causes one to use critical thinking which provides different viewpoints. Often times, we walk around thinking that we know it all and have it together until reality sets in. Being open to learning from others is key to being successful. There is a saying that was said a lot while growing up, “the mind is a terrible” thing to waste. Then, it was puzzling to why the older people would say it so frequently. But, now it completely makes sense, especially after taking this class and learning the importance of it all. In closing, psychology is very important because it deals with the brain, things that occur on an everyday basis, and gives a better understanding of what is going on. It is vital for people to stop thinking that they are crazy and too “cool” to go see a psychiatrist because mental health illness are at an all-time high because people fail to get help. There are disorder that have a serious effect on one’s life such anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and so many more. Once you know better, than you will do better by taking action to make a better life for yourself. Psychology helps to understand what is happening and get to the bottom of why these things are actually happening and provides a solution and method to overcome.
