Report On Self-Directed Learning Course
What did I learn?
Self-directed learning is a unique method of learning developed by Malcolm Knowles. As his last name suggests Knowles = Knowledge, self-directed learning is a process in which people, usually students take the ambition sometimes with help and sometimes without help to learn about their learning needs. Most of the time, students learning needs can solved with the proper relationship between the tutor and the student, which is their ultimate goal. Some people within the educational sphere describe self-directed learning as a healthy approach of establishing the proper connection and communication between schooling and learning so that the learning duty is mostly the responsibility and the key of the students understanding of the lesson.
One of the main things that students must understand Is that you need to be aware that you have the ability to choose, but you must also have the ability to blame yourself and accept the full responsibility when things don’t go as planned. If you want to have a successful educational career, you must have a certain character that people don’t have. Remember the better the things you are at when you are a student, the better you are in the eyes of the public, employers and scholarship agencies. When of the main things you need to have is the curiosity for learning. Admit it, the time you have been the end of a lecture and quizzes it small and you need to have the ability to memorize a lot of information in a short period of time.
Now here is where curiosity kicks in. Because you have the ability to wonder and think in the future, students with this trait have the ability to study ahead of time and that allows them to develop the required knowledge for them to pass and succeed. There are many characters and behaviors you need to have but this is going to be a huge journal if I start to mention everything.
What are my gaps?
- One of my main gaps is the relationship between reflective learning and adult learning principles. Till this day I haven’t quite yet understood the differences between them and how they relate with one another.
- Another thing that I have yet to understand, is how this Reflective learning will help me and how can I develop this habit in my educational career as a foundation year medical student in University of Sharjah.

How to fill in the Gap?
- A quiet and an easy way for me to fill my gaps is to start listening to YouTube Videos where people speak about the related topics and help me understand what I am missing.
- Another thing I can do is to try and listen harder in the lectures which will certainly help me remember in the short run, but honestly and I need to develop a method to learn easier and quicker.
- Ask friends: Something that I have yet to start which seems ignorant is to start and ask friends. I personally can’t believe that I am entering the 5th week and I hardly have ever asked anyone about anything.
