"Mister President: The Story Of Ronald Reagan" By Mary Virginia Fox

The book I chose to read for my book review was “Mister President: The Story Of Ronald Reagan” by Mary Virginia Fox. This book is a very good, descriptive book about the life of our 40th president of the United States of America. It starts off by describing Ronald Reagan as a baby and it goes throughout his life from jobs and his presidency until he dies. It is very informational and I will use it to help me on the end of the year project because of the great information given in it. I would recommend this for anyone interested in learning about the 40th US president, Ronald Reagan. It would be great and a very helpful book for people wanting to learn about Ronald Reagan’s life.

The book starts off by describing Ronald Reagan’s childhood. He was born on February 6, 1911. His father was Jack Reagan. His mother’s name was Nancy Reagan. He was born in Tampico, Illinois. Both of his parents thought he looked like a fat little dutchman. Reagan only has one brother whose name was Nile. They grew up very poor. Ronald had a hard time trying to get a job at a young age. “Reagan was broke, in debt, and without a glimmer of a job. ” His father was an alcoholic, and he had only graduated grade school. Jack worked as a salesman. They moved a lot for a family of their time because of Jack bouncing from job to job. Their mother taught them about the effects of alcohol because she did not want them to be like their father.

Ronald Reagan went to Dizon High School and graduated in 1928. He played on the football team, basketball team, and president of student body. He also acted in plays and he wrote for the school newspaper. He was very popular because of this. After high school, he worked as a lifeguard and saved 77 people. In 1928, he enrolled at Eureka College. For 3 reasons, “He couldn’t afford a tuition, it was close to home, and, most important, that was where Margaret Clever was going”. Margaret Clever was Reagan’s “crush” at the time but nothing really came of it. He graduated with a C average in 1932. After college he worked as a sportscaster for WOC (world of chiropractic). He then got a job sportscaster for the University of Iowa. He was later sent to Southern California to do his reports on the Chicago Cubs spring baseball training season on the island for Catalina. He was then sent back to his radio job. When he got home some exciting news for him was waiting waiting. “A telegram agent stated, ‘WARNER OFFERS CONTRACT SEVEN YEARS, ONE YEAR’S OPTION, STARTING AT $200 A WEEK. WHAT SHALL I DO?’ ” he answered “SIGN BEFORE THEY CHANGE THEIR MINDS. ” He was very excited for his job as a sportscaster. After being a sportscaster for awhile he stopped and started an acting career where he did very well and starred in many movies such as “The Last Weekend” and “Yearling”. He always had a love for politics and he studied them in school. This love for politics leads to his presidency later.

Sadly in 1941, Jack Reagan, past away. This was had for Ronald Reagan. Then Ronald Reagan married Jane Wyman on January 26, 1940. Together they had a daughter and adopted a son. On June 28, 1948, they got a divorce. This makes Ronald Reagan the only president to ever have a divorce. March 4, 1952 Ronald Reagan got married to Nancy Davis Reagan, and they had two kids together. Their first child was born on October 26, 1952, her name was Patti Reagan. They also had a son named Ronald Prescott Reagan. Nancy was Ronald Reagan’s first lady. They were married for a total of 52 years before Ronald Reagan died in 2004. Nancy later died March 6, 2016.

Ronald Reagan had always enjoyed studying and learning about politics. Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the United States of America. He served as President from 1981- 1889. Reagan was inaugurated January 20, 1981. He was a republican. President Reagan survived assassination attempt. He proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. Then the Iran-Contra Affair which became public in 1986. In 1987, Reagan signed an Arms Control Pact with the Soviet leader. Ronald Reagan was a very loved present. After Reagan’s term ended in 1989, George Bush became the next president.

The book did not have much information of Ronald Reagan’s death there was only a few things. For example, Reagan died June 5th, 2004 in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, California. He died of Pneumonia which is an infection where the air sacs with fluid. The morning that he died, there were reports that his health was deteriorating. Reagan had been suffering from alzheimer's for nine years previously.

“Mister President: The Story of Ronald Reagan” by Mary Virginia Fox, in my opinion, was a good book because is described Ronald Reagan's life very well. It gave details on Ronald Reagan’s life from the time he was born in 1911 till the time he die in 2004. It could have described his death a little better but it went in extra detail in his different careers in early adulthood. If I had to rate this book I would give it a 7 out of 10. It would be a good book for people to get information on Ronald Reagan’s career including before his presidency. It also goes into great detail on all the things that happened during his presidency. Overall, Ronald Reagan was a very good man and people loved him and reading this story taught me that even people who do not have a very good childhood they can still do great things in their life.
