Review Of The Martian By Andy Weir
The Martian is a story about Mark Watney, a botanist on the third mission to mars called Ares 3. Mark and his crew flew for nearly a year to land on mars to study and run experiments. But then one day when they were collecting rocks to study them there was a warning coming in, it was a storm warning and it seems like it’s a huge one. The crew braced for the storm and had to evacuate because it was a 175 kph (108 mph) winds so they had to leave before the ship they used to get on to mars tilted over and broke so they all got into their suits and left, except Mark Watney. While they were heading to the ship at 108 mph winds a radio and its antenna flew and hit Mark and sent him flying and they thought he was dead because his suit computer shot off saying he was dead, so the crew left mars without him and they were all devastated.
A day later Mark woke up to alarms blaring from his suit, he stood up and looked down to where his pelvis was and saw an antenna sticking out connected to a wire. He cut the wire and crawled up the hi and got to the Hab (where they were saying), once he got there very painfully he took out the antenna and went to the medic area and numbed everything around it and got the wren of the antenna out, after he took it out he used a staple gun and stabled the wound shut. After he got the injury situated he decided how he is going to survive until Ares 4 comes (4-5 years). So when he was sitting there thinking he remembered he was a botanist so he decided to plant potatoes but it was a very hard process.
One of my favorite quotes is on the very first page, it is marks own log entry and he says “I’m pretty much fucked. That’s my considered opinion. Fucked. Six days into what should be the greatest two months of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare” This quote really grabbed my attention because it made me wonder what actually happened that Mark would say this. I wanted to see the outcome if Mark would actually be the first person to die on Mars.
Another quote I found funny is from Mark in log entry sol 500 he said “I’ll spend the rest of the evening enjoying a potato. And by “enjoying” I mean “hating” it so much It so much I want to kill people”. I found this funny because earlier in the book Mark needed to be able to grow food. He had to grow potatoes in his and his crewmates poop to fertilize it. I learned that maybe, in the future Mars missions by humans could really happen. I also learned that there are really dangerous sandstorms on Mars. I was curious about that after reading it and I looked at articles and research online confirming mars has sandstorms.
My review of the story is it’s a really good book I highly recommend the book who are looking into getting this book and the movie is almost like it there is some parts that aren't in the book but besides that it is an amazing book.
