Review Of The Movie Birdman Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance
Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a dark comedy and drama film made in 2014 and directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and produced by James W. Skotchdopole, John Lesher, Arnon Milchan, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The story stars Riggan Thomson, a washed-up Hollywood actor that is highly known for his role in the superhero film "Birdman", Thomson struggles to stage a Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver 's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love."
The film stars Michael Keaton as Riggan Thomson, Edward Norton as Mike Shiner, Zach Galifianakis as Jake, Emma Stone as Sam Thomson, Naomi Watts as Lesley Truman, Amy Ryan as Sylvia Thomson, and Andrea Riseborough as Laura Aulburn.
The film has won many awards including the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography at the Academy's Award ceremony. It also won Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well as Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Michael Keaton. Birdman also won an award for Best Screenplay at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards.
The word cinematography comes to us from three Greek roots — kinesis, meaning “movement”; photo, meaning “light”; and graphia, meaning “writing” — but the word was coined only after motion pictures themselves were invented. This film is famous for its creative one continuous shot. The majority of the credit goes to cinematography artist Emmanuel Lubezki his camera movement was the main reason that the edits of the film were hidden so well but of course without the skillful editing from Douglas Crise and Stephen Mirrione this movie would have fallen apart. Crise and Mirrione used a series of hidden cuts throughout the film to allow for multiple takes and still gave the feel of one continuous shot. Instead of fading to black they hid their cuts in things much harder to notice, like a sweeping pan of the camera over a puddle on the ground. The variation in color and exposure alongside the motion blur makes it almost impossible to notice the cut if you're not paying attention.
The director of this film used a great number of acting to show meaning to the movie. The choice of actors to play in this film was absolutely the greatest idea ever. Michael Keaton playing in a movie about a washed-up superhero actor is actually kind of baffling because he once played in the movie Batman which is similar to Birdman. Even the voice of Birdman is pretty deep just like Batman. I feel like the director had this in mind when creating this film. I think that Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s lack of communication meaning is what confuses the audience. I feel like the film could go either way in the choice of genre. The father-daughter theme in the film, depicted the relationship of Riggan and Samantha Thomson, and were the most important parts of the film to portray for co-writers Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Nicolas Giacobone, as they both had similar experiences involving their own relationships with their daughters.
Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is by far one of the most creative works of art that I have ever seen. I personally liked the film because of Edward Norton’s character. Mike Shiner was definitely one of the most funniest and obnoxious characters in this film. I’d recommend this film to all my family and friends because of the drama and dark comedy. This film is not for everyone due to the dark humor but it was definitely a great film for my fiancée and I.
