While accompanying the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–06), Sacagawea served as an interpreter. She also provided significant assistance by searching for edible plants and making moccasins and clothing. Her presence with the expedition helped them interact positively with the various Indian peoples they encountered. At one point in the journey, Sacagawea was instrumental in obtaining horses and guides from a band of Shoshone (led by her brother Cameahwait); without them the expedition might well have ended.
