Selfishness In Today’s World And In Charles Dickens’ A Tale Of Two Cities
In today’s world, not many people are willing to sacrifice themselves for other people. Unfortunately, there are not many people left to love someone more than yourself. People are more selfish for themselves in these days rather than being a selfless person. Also, people are not willing to do something bad to themselves for others, unlike in the novel of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Many people also do not think about for other person’s care. Today people are more not likely to be emotional in anyways. Now people are growing without any kinds of emotions. A person thinks about just themselves. Because while they are growing they taught to be just thinking about themselves, not for other people's feelings, or their emotions. So people are learning how to become a selfish person instead of a selfless person. Also today, one of the ways to survive in society is to be a selfish person. Because some people might see a selfless person as a weak chain in the chamber, so that person gets avoid by the society. Although as today, many people are not even showing their real feelings to others. Instead of showing they decide to hide or act about their feelings. That can be one of the good reasons for a person to become a selfish person than a selfless person.
In the novel, besides Charles Darnay, Sydney Carton also loves Lucie and shows his love by sacrificing himself for her happiness. When Sydney Carton decides to confess his love to Lucie Manette, he did not want her to be unhappy in the future. 'O Miss Manette, when the little picture of a happy father's face looks up in yours when you see your own bright beauty springing up anew at your feet, think now and then that there is a man who would give his life, to keep a life you love beside you!'. Instead of just thinking about him, he picked what was the best for Lucie instead. So he sacrificed his love for her goods. As well as Sydney Carton’s love to Lucie, he was a big sacrifice for everyone else in the novel too. For every action, he took in the novel for other people’s goods. Such as, he never takes a spotlight from Mr. Stryver, even though he does the all of the jobs. He is sacrificing his success to Mr. Stryver.
Today it is very hard to see people, who want to share their success or their spotlights with others. Just because of his love Sydney Carton decides to change places with Charles Darnay, when he was held in prison and he was going to execution, just because of his love to Lucie Manette. When it ended for him, he was dreaming about how he will be remembered. 'I see that I hold a sanctuary in their hearts, and in the hearts of their descendants, generations hence…. I know that each was not more honored and held sacred in the other’s soul than I was in the souls of both'. For his love, he was willing to die, so they can live a happier life. Today it is very hard to find a loving person like Sydney Carton, that can willing to hurt themselves for their loved ones.
Today, even when it is about their own families, people are willing to be selfish than a selfless person. Because people are thinking like; that all will pass and they will be the remaining ones no matter happens to another person. In the novel, there was another character that willing to sacrifice her life for others. Miss Pross was one of the characters that looked like she was a selfish person. Because she did not want to share Lucie with anyone else, even with her father too. She was scared to lose Lucie, and she wanted to keep her on her side. Miss Pross showed her selfishness at many other times too. When the time came, Miss Pross was thinking about her brother, John Barsad, and Lucie’s marriage. Because she did not want Lucie to marry another person. It was also an easy way to keep Lucie in her side.
Today many people are doing what Miss Pross does. They are deciding to be a selfish person to keep their loved ones close to them rather than losing them. Miss Pross seems like she does not care about others, except herself in the novel. But the truth is not. She is sacrificing herself for Lucie’s family. When Miss Pross and Madame Defarge get into a fight, without thinking she sacrificed her life for others. Just because she was caring about Lucie a lot. Like in the novel it is possible to find some people in the real world that can sacrifice themselves for their loved ones, but it is really rare or almost impossible. When it comes to strangers it is totally impossible.
Today people are more likely to be a selfish person than a selfless person. That is very sad, because today more people are learning about just thinking about themselves rather than anyone else, and they are growing up with that thought. The more selfish people are getting, finding a person that is willing to sacrifice themselves for other people’s goods are in a less chance.
