Short Essay on Skills of Listening

One of the main challenges in our society is poor listening skills in conversation and it can caused a problem that happens to me in the past. This is short essay on skills where I will share my viewpoint. When I got home months ago, the doors of the house were closed. I spent almost half day waiting outside. The day was so frustrating because I have a lot of things to do, adding to this, my brother who holds the keys still does not want to go home. I've been trying to contact him for hours, and he really doesn't pick up the phone. My brother will eventually arrive before the day ends. I started yelling at him, and I asked him why he had to lock the doors, even though I told him I was going to go home early, and he began to explain and yell at me too. Knowing that nothing was going to happen, I just walked out, went to my place, and didn't speak to him again. And we missed each other's chance to hear each other's explanation.

Among the four qualities of good listening, Good listening is much more than being silent while the other person talks is missing in the situation when my brother and I started to yell at each other and did not listen to each other's reasons. If you can't stay silent in a conversation when others are talking, basically you didn't even have a conversation. An conversation must be an exchanging of ideas and opinion. Therefore, if you can't pause, you can't listen. Being silent will help you both gather your own thoughts on what you hear or say. It also provides you time for anything you listen to to be absorbed or analyzed. Another quality that is missing in the situation is good listening was seen as a cooperative conversation. We are fighting against one another in my scenario and not being cooperative in the conversation. If you can't help to develop a conversation and you want to disagree about what someone is saying, it's not a fruitful conversation. Perhaps it will end in a fight. Also, if the flow of the conversation is cannot be managed smoothly, then listeners may not understand what you are trying to saying.

I had a realization that good listening skills are an integral part of successful communication and it can help us to develop relationships and address conflicts with other people. Having good listening skills helps us to show that we appreciate, respect, and pay attention to other people's opinions and emotions.
