Social Media As A Source Of Self- Objectification

Self-monitoring is an idea created by Mark Snyder that explains how people regulate their behavior in social situations to accommodate themselves and fit in. People will scrutinize what they say or hold themselves back at certain times. They are more concerned with stating the precise things and fitting in then being your true self. Self- objectification is when you think of yourself from the perspective of others as a toy rather than a person. Both of these concepts tie into symbolic interactionism; when people communicate using language. It’s the way people interact otherwise with various symbols. Different objects or situations acquire different meanings depending upon groups of ethnicity, religion, or class. Social media plays a big role I think in self-objectification and self-monitoring. When we put ourselves on social media like this we are objectifying ourselves as an object to be seen for others viewing pleasure. Self-objectification correlates with female competition and how women strive for male attention without even realizing it. It’s become social manner to objectify ourselves and use social media as a platform to do it. To stop this objectification, we need to start seeing our bodies as more than just an object but for its an entire purpose. Media needs to stop putting ads out there telling women “weight-loss" tips. You are not just your breast, face, legs, or anything else. The entertainment world and reality line have been blurred, and it’s up to us to fix it. Allowing ourselves to compare ourselves and others to the airbrushed women we see on billboards will purely cause us harm.
