The County of Hidalgo has been dealing with the Drainage system overflowing problem since July 2018, which caused people homes to flood and property to fill with sewer water. Resulting in people having to hammer down walls in their homes and businesses. However, there are several solutions that have been put to action by the Hidalgo County.
Crews have been assigned to pumping water out from flooded areas, fix dirt roads destroyed by erosion, clean the drainage system, and the start of the drainage projects. The General Manager stated, “We have designed a new drainage system and doubling on unclogging the drainage system”. The Hidalgo General concluded the county can do more with the bond that will be voted upon in the November election. The crews have been working day and night to pump water into a truck to clear up the road. Tractors have been assigned to level the dirt roads for public buses to transport children to school. The News channels have been spreading the word on making sure that nothing is being thrown in to the sewer pipe line, or water canals.
Secondly, the Hidalgo County is facing is La Joya school district. Regarding the student assault allegations, the officials have held a conference to address the issue to clarify what they said was misinformation being spread on social media and protests by parents demanding information on allegations of a sexual assault at Tabasco Elementary last school year. The Public Information Coordinator can out with a statement, “We are taking the time to address the situation because, first and foremost, we care about our students”. The Student assault allegations include a 14-year-old male student that is said attacked a 5-year-old female student at Tabasco Elementary in the boy bathroom during school hours last school year. Which was splatted over Facebook with “No parents were notified, this could’ve occurred to potentially anyone’s child in that school. After the incident, everyone turned his or her backs on my daughter no school counseling was offered nothing it was as if my daughter never existed” on the page #Justiceforher. Making parents with children attending Tabasco Elementary concerned that their children are not in a safe environment at school which is supposed to be a safe space. Not only that but the fact that parents were not notified about this issue that happened last year on April 26.
The district police of La Joya informed the community that when the incident happened it was reported to La Joya ISD police staff and authorities and that they took immediate action with procedures in place to investigate the incident. The teen boy was a tutor part of the Coca-Cola Valued Youth Program, which helps at-risk middle and high schoolers by giving them an opportunity to tutor younger peers. After, the attack was reported at Tabasco Elementary the program was discontinued immediately and indefinitely last spring, but only at that particular campus.
