Sucesses And Failures Of The Roman Republic And The Roman Empire

The Roman Republic was successful because of aqueducts and 12 table laws. The Roman Republic was the first to build aqueducts. Aqueducts are a construction built to transport water to cities from the longest of distances. This help and made the Roman Republic successful because it gave citizens nice, fresh, and clean drinkable water and water for farming. The 12 table laws made the Roman Republic a success because Plebeians who are the farmers, merchants, and artisans made up most of the civilization. They were citizens but had little to no rights. Plebeians of the Roman Republic demanded for power and equality. When Rome engraved this, it was the plebeians’ success. The 12 Table Laws gave plebeians their rights, as citizens.

The Roman Republic was viewed as a failure because of Rome’s treatment to their soldiers and the killing of the Gracchus brothers and senate. Roman commanders mixed great rewards with harsh punishment. Men, who showed courage and bravery in the wars were praised and got gifts. But if men, especially young soldiers, were to scared and ran away from the action one out of every ten men who were disgraced was killed. I feel like this was a fail because they killed their own people for not fighting in a war and that was more men that was being killed. Gaius Gracchus and Tiberius Gracchus were two brothers who became tribunes. They tried to help the poor by giving land and lowering prices on grain from Egypt. People of the senate wanted to kill the brothers because they disagreed with them. The senate also felt threatened by their ideas to help the people of Rome. So, they killed them both. This was a failure because the Gracchus brother’s idea could have expanded the population of the Roman Empire. And basically like the over killing of people who tries to help people or tries to gain power was also a fail. Like the death of Julius Caesar and Gracchus brothers and other people who were assassinated all because the senate did not like them. One way the Roman Republic could have changed the way they treated their soldiers is easing the punishment because some soldiers might have not wanted to soldiers, maybe they had an interest in something else. And one way the Roman Republic could have changed the way that the senate work is limiting their power even more. If on leader or dictator or emperor was killed it would have most likely been the senate. If the Senate hadn’t have killed certain people maybe the Empire would have been a success rather than a failure.

The Roman Empire was successful because of Julius Caesar and the building of roads and bridges. Julius Caesar was a very determined military commander, but then became the ruler of Rome. After Caesar conquered many areas there were many conquered people who didn’t have and jobs and no money. So what he did was created public work for the unemployed. He granted people Roman citizenship and organized the government once again. Julius Caesar became more powerful. Many people feared and were jealous so his enemies killed him. Bridges and roads are used today to get to different places. So when the Roman Empire built these roads and bridges it made a huge impact because they were able to get to places more efficiently, deliver messages, and improved trade which really benefited the Roman Empire.

The Roman Empire was viewed as a failure because of Imperialism and the invasions. You would think that imperialism would benefit Rome more than it didn’t benefit it. The expansion to more wars to extending the empire's power sounds like it is more of a success. But it is not. It’s not because this lead to more resources being used which made resources smaller. And when the resources becomes smaller the labor increases. You need more workers on certain stuff and if you don’t have it, then the empire starts to decrease. War can definitely be a huge effect on a civilization. So when the Huns, Vandals, and the Visigoths invade The Roman Empire it weakened the empire, tremendously. Lost after lost, The Roman Empire soon failed. One way the Roman Empire could have change in imperialism is having some control and be less greedy. There is a difference between expanding for the benefit of Rome and expanding to for more power. And that kind of ties in with the invasions because the Roman Empire was already weakening so invaders came and invade Rome, so, Rome couldn’t expand any farther.
