Susan B.Anthony and Women's Right to Vote
Women’s rights are becoming better than how they used to be. “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less”. Susan B. Anthony believed that women should have the right to vote. In one of the Susan B.Anthony essays we will look closer at her life.
We now think, why were women mistreated in the 1900’s until? Let’s go back to the 1900’s, women were not allowed to vote or even leave the house without a man.Women were not treated equal to men and did not get the same respect as they deserved. In order for women to leave the house, they will need to have her husband.Otherwise, the women would be called names that she is trying to cheat. On the other hand, men were allowed to leave the house anytime and come back anytime they wished.During 1900’s, several women’s rights movement proved to be effective as today we see how their rights have profoundly changed.
In the early 1900’s women were never allowed to vote and did not have a say in any type of politics. Over the years, the beginning of the 1910’s women began to speak up that they should have a say.We should be concerned because women have good ideas that should be heard. They can say an important idea that can change people’s view of everything. There have been many meetings that feminists discuss how they can change things.“In 1848, a group of abolitionist activists - mostly women, but some men - gathered in Seneca Falls, New York to discuss the problem of women’s rights”. Even at that time women and some men wanted to have meetings to improve women’s rights.People had to start somewhere to have change.
Many women have struggled to have better rights for women now. These women from many years is what allowed us to start voting and leave the house without a man. Some women that were affected were: Margaret Sanger, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, and Susan B. Anthony. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were one of the top and famous leaders of the Women’s Suffrage.Susan B.Anthony tried to vote when the 14th and 15th amendment was passed. She later ended up getting arrested.Another Women’s Suffrage leader was Margaret Sanger, she traveled around Europe with articles and letter. Those articles and letters is what spread the word of The Suffrage and encouraged more people to join the movement.“Individual women including: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Sanger, Esther Peterson, Betty Friedan, Catharine Mackinnon - have, through their writings and activities, become representatives of feminist agendas on specific issues and debates”. All these women were feminists that wanted to inspire other women to do what they are doing. They are doing this for every women to be equal and not feel less than men.
Many people may not understand the struggle and how the problem has led to other problems. It is because of this problem, Women were not allowed to give their ideas, and their opinions which could have helped the country. Any women should give her opinion on things and ideas. Women in the 1900’s helped with war as nurses, since they were nurses they should have been given the right to say what could help during the war. They were witnessing how and where the soldiers were getting injured. With that knowledge, they could have strategy ideas. If we didn’t solve this problem earlier, many more things may have been invented to possibly save the world at some point.
There is always a solution to every problem. In this situation the problem took longer to solve because women were not given the proper rights until the late 1900’s. Some of the problems are not solved until now. Women now may not get paid as much as men in the U.S. Women now can have the same exact position as a man, but the man can get a higher paycheck. It all started to change as the years went by, more people in the West began to listen to new ideas. They had a different perspective on women, they believed that they had more than cleaning and staying in the kitchen. One of the first states that actually allowed women to say their ideas was Wyoming. “Younger states and territories like Wyoming were more willing to consider fresh ideas about who could vote” (Schons). Wyoming was actually putting into consideration the thought of voting.
Men and women may say that there are no possible solutions. They say that there is no point in trying to allow women to do the same and have equal rights as men. For every problem, there is a solution. The most flat out and simplest solution is giving women a say in things and not to discriminate. The fairest solution to some women’s problem is giving equal pay for jobs that are done the same. All women deserve the chance to change the world. It does not matter what age the person is. Any solution like these would make the world easy for everyone. None of it would work is women were told what to do. Every women at least have to have a say in things. Women can sometimes abuse the power of speaking up. If any women want the problem to be solved, then they should be thankful for what they have now. The times have changed since the beginning. “But before 1910, only these four states allowed women to vote”. The only states that allowed women to vote were Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho. Back in the 1900’s any women wished that they lived those 4 states.
In conclusion, “Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less”. This quote has stayed on our minds while learning more on why women should vote. Every single women should have the right to vote. If women can do the same job as a man, then they should be allowed to vote like one of them. In the 1900’s all women were used to cleaning and not leaving the house. Most women were being used and never had a share in any money. Women started a rebellion and the suffrage, to show everyone what they are capable of. Men underestimate women for what they can do. Women have seen what men do when they are outside working. Now as women we appreciate what has changed, women have grown to help each other and make each other stronger. During the 1900’s, several women’s rights movements proved to be effective as today we see how their rights have profoundly changed. Women now can vote and have their ideas heard. Some women even get paid the same or even more than men.
