The Benefits In The Art Of Sewing
Sewing is quickly becoming a dying art of the past. While sewing has plenty of benefits, The upcoming generations have lost the art of working with their hands. The new age takes a shirt with a small rip and throws it away when you could easily fix it yourself. When you get cold you can make a good quality warm quilt cheaper then it would cost to buy one. People started sewing over 20,000 years ago in the ice age. Archaeologists have discovered bone needles with eyes used to sew skins and leathers together. Since then it has been improved greatly with the invention of the sewing machine in the 1846. Is still being improved today, but the precious art is dying. So many uses for the art. The benefits quickly overcome the downfalls.
Learning how to sew is a long and tedious process that can take years. “There are always new things to learn, techniques to improve, faults to correct. ” (Crosbie). Sewing is a never ending learning process. With new techniques and corrections to make to someone's faults. “If you sew, you know that you are never "there. "” (Crosbie). When sewing there is always something for someone to improve on. People are never “there” humankind can always improve their technique or fix their methods. Something in the art is always changing such as “The preparation of fabrics is changing. ”(Crosbie) how the cloth to be sewn is made is changing. The standard process of straightening and pulling a piece into a square still works, but many new fabrics are made out of a synthetic material where nothing can be done but just lay out the material. “Banish bulk. Trim and grade seams aggressively. Lumpy collars and bumpy facings shriek homemade. ”(Crosbie) When sewing it is good to trim all of the excess materials when for example making a shirt from the collar to make it seem less homemade and more of a professional shirt. Sewing is never ending and always growing changing and getting better.
Knowing how to sew has several benefits from being able to repair personal clothing and other fabrics, to being able to make a blanket if the world goes bad. Other personal benefits such as hand eye coordination, helps prosper a creative mind, and can even ward off dementia. The act of learning how to sew can have benefits itself. "Making things on today's modern sewing machines incorporates all the elements of STEM education in an artful way that builds self-esteem and perseverance. " (Charnley). STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is an important part of society and a growing part as well, today's children are growing in a world full and thriving with technology. Learning even the basic of sewing grows these STEM skills and gives a sense of accomplishment. However at the same time sewing gives other benefits to the world, from charities to just good deeds. “sewing enthusiasts and neophytes, night owls and early risers, all here to help out a local women's hospital…. host a two-day Quilt for Kids, where the handmade creations are given to Tampa Children's Hospital. ” (Leberson). People of all likes come around and sew blankets to give to hospitals for the needy out of the kindness of their hearts. “using his passion for helping people to launch a clothing line called The Silent Battle to bring awareness and raise money to help local veterans with PTSD. ” (Kaczke). This man sews and set up a clothing line for vets with PTSD to support his fellow brothers who are struggling with their internal battle. As shown their are many benefits to sewing and knowing how to, people helping each other or personal benefit either way it helps.
Sewing is a diverse art in which women and men can participate. “MORE than 20 men were engaged in a basic sewing and embroidery course at Kokopo East New Britain Province…. said they used to think that sewing was a woman's job” (Men). In the industry of sewing there is a large diversity of men and women, there is nothing in sewing being a “womans hobby” it is equally beneficial for both men and women. The first sewing machine was invented by a man in 1790. There is no benefit to a certain gender or race in sewing, everyone has the same equal opportunity.
While sewing is helpful their are other options. Someone can make a blanket or buy a heater in the winter. “Heat in a box Space heaters and stoves can provide enough heat for a room and avoid more costly projects. ” (Small) space heaters are an affordable easy to use piece of technology in our age. While as this is a good statement a space heater has many flaws. Electrical problems, in the case of a power outage it is unusable. There are many other alternatives to sewing itself. For instance someone can use a fabric glue to hold fabrics together instead of sewing. However a blanket, is good whenever anytime, and there is no better feeling then wrapping up in a blanket.
As have been shown the many benefits of sewing and everything involved are unimaginable. From just being cold and covering up with a sewn blanket. Or charity events where people sew blankets to give away. The art of sewing has been around since early man. It has forever been an improving art with amazing advances thanks to technology. While being used in home for a hobby or out in the world as a job or livelihood. Sewing grew into in the medical field a surgical suture and in instances has save lives. But at the same time it is dying, with less and less participating in the art. Picking up a needle and thread for yourself might change your life.
