The Choice Of Job Opportunity According To Age

Actually there is hardly any research where age range was the main focus while comparing with mode choice of job location. But to relate mode choice with other factors, age has been considered most of the time. Mode choice toward shopping sites of elderly people has been analyzed and it was found that elderly people don’t like to depend on others (car passenger/taxi). They prefer driving their own car or walking to the sites in London city. From another research work, it was found that employee of age group 18-35 prefer two-wheeler for work trips. On the other hand, people of age group prefer to drive their car for job location in Calicut city. This journal shows that age has influence over mode choice.

Actually, in different cities the relation of modal choice with age range have been found in different perspective. “The results in a study showed that individuals who are aged between 18 and 65 are likely to walk more often to their work location than people of other age groups. In a study on walking behaviors in different trip purposes, it was found that females are more likely to walk than males for shopping and work trips but in study trips, girls are less likely to walk than boys. Results also showed that age had no statistically significant effect on choosing walking in shopping trips but individual’s over 60 years were more willing to walk in work trips.” So, here it says that age has little significance over mode choice, but in a number of journals the opposite was found. As the project is focusing on age range only for job location modal choice, so results might be different from this research analysis.

Many studies state that people living in urban areas travel less by car than people living in suburban areas because of differences in density and diversity (Cervero 1996). So, choice of mode for job location will also depend on the neighborhood as usual. Again, people choose their neighborhoods which enable them to travel with their preferred travel mode. In few literatures it was claimed that the employment decentralization is affection modal choice characteristics by shifting away sustainable forms of transportation to private automobile.

In many analysis, it was found that income and availability of having private car is also a factor of modal choice for work sites. In a journal where most of the data was collected from people of 18-35 age range, who were new in job market, shows that these group has lower capacity of having car than their senior (age range >36 years) due to lower income and this leads them to use public transportation more. On the other hand, relocation of jobs also influences to use public transportation in a new town.
