The Concept And Meaning Of Labeling Theory

In our society today Labeling theory is a current issue amongst different ethnic groups which is faced on an everyday basis. We tend to give people numerous of labels based on who we think they are, which is based on how people view society. 

Labeling Theory has multiple definitions, but Howard Becker viewed this theory as a form of social control that can influence people’s lives. Labeling Theory focuses on societies reaction to the deviant behavior rather than the behavior itself. Labeling Theory stresses the ideal that deviance is a relative term. Basically, people become labeled by accepting the label as a personal identity. Once an individual is impacted by labeling, they tend to look at self-worth and self-identity. Also, once an individual receives a label, you become an easier target depending on the circumstances or situation. However, I view Labeling Theory as a mental image or a way of thinking about a person, thing, or event that follows a conventional or fixed pattern and makes no allowances for individual difference.

For instance if we look at NPR’s Wade Goodwyn article published on October 2, 2019 on the case of Ex-Dallas officer Amber Guyer September 6, 2018, we could clearly see how Labeling Theory was primed to think an African American male named, “Botham Jean’s”, was rated to be a criminal and intruder in his own home by Ex-Dallas office Amber Guyer. However, this was not the case, Ms. Amber Guyger was racial profiling going on in terms of how law authorities work have unconscious biases against different people of race. They become labeled as more dangerous, violent or aggressive, when they may not be. Different ethnic groups may also be primed to be rated as a criminal, guilty, more deserving of punishment, more likely to reoffend, etc. Overall, in this case there were numerous of things mentioned that stood out in the case as labeling.

In closing, labeling has been studied, classified and theorized by many and we as people of different ethnicities have all played a role or victim. Labeling Theory suggests that people are given labels based on how others view their tendencies or behaviors. Labeling is caused by economic and social inequality, which is lead to an unequal opportunity structure amongst different people of color. However, moving forward in society we as people should look at different objectives and criteria to implement, which could help eliminate labeling against any person of race, color, or creed.
