The Connection Of Personal Troubles And Public Issues Such As Obesity

Every person in the world faces some kind of personal troubles. These personal troubles are linked to public issues that affect the world in different ways. C. Wright Mills considers this as sociological imagination, the ability to see the intimate realities of our own lives in the context of common social structure. Meaning the ability to see our own troubles as they connect to issues faced all around the world. This quality of mind means that you understand that your troubles are not just yours, they are the world’s troubles as well and there are public issues that are dealing with these troubles. It is just not how we shape as one but how we shape society. Mills gives several examples to understand how personal troubles and public issues are related. The one that I found easiest to understand was about marriage. Since marriage and divorce is a hot topic nowadays what better way to show the connection between personal troubles and public issues. That is its task and its promise. This is useful because it allows us to understand that we should not feel that our lives are set up for failure. There is a reason that we are having these personal troubles and that they are connected to public issues.

Obesity is a huge public issue in today’s world. More kids today suffer from obesity because of the massive amount of fast food that is available at any time of the day. Not only does the fast food restaurants hold accountability for the high number of childhood obesity's they also are doing not very much to stop obesity. Not only are children affected by obesity, it ranges from the age of two years old to one hundred years old. This is the case due to how today's society has changed. People now have the ability to get to one place to another within a shorter amount of time compared to the past. Communication to one another is now almost instantaneous. With these in mind, today's society is more fast-paced, resulting in stuff like fast food restaurants.

Obesity is a major issue that is taking over our world and affecting many people’s lives. This health problem is very common in today’s world rather than in the 1900’s when obesity was frowned upon. I am not saying that obesity is still not frowned upon but, it is more common than it use to be.As an employee at a pizza and pub restaurant, I see first hand on how the types of food that we serve to customers and ourselves affect us. When I started working there, I weighed 160 lbs. After working there for almost 4 years, I've gained about 50-60 lbs. I say that range due to how I've been trying to work out and lose the weight. I can say the weight gain came from the kinds of food that my work serves. I would work so much that I would just eat some of the food that I would make there. With the lack of a healthier alternative, I was packing on weight and it flat-out just sucked. Many people have coped with their obesity by having dangerous weight loss surgeries that can help them cope with their hungry and allow them to feel full sooner. Many people have chosen to the dangerous surgery, Gastric Bypass that reroutes your stomach to make it where you have a whole new stomach that is very much smaller.

While this seems ideal, many people end up dying from this surgery. The newest and safest way to cope with obesity is by having Lap-Band surgery which done by microscopic surgery that places a rubber band around the top of the stomach and is connected to an access port which can be injected with saline to tighten or loosen the band depending on the amount of weight loss. While these obesity problems can be fixed nowadays by weight loss surgery, people did not have this option fifty to two hundred
