The Contribution Of Technology To Social Isolation
Think about a world today that would have no internet, imaging how chaotic and disconnecting the life in the world would be. The internet has changed the world in unimaginable ways that were only works of dreams and imagination in the past. Technology has grown to such a point that it is involved in our daily lives from watching media to communications. The affect it has on our global economy has given hikes and rises to corporations and independent companies.
The reason of this argument is for all those all around the world, so that we can see the burden of social isolation amongst the populous and how destructive it is becoming on our society and culture, “Social Isolation and New Technology, Pew found that the contacts and associations made by utilizing those instruments don't have a go at the cost of genuine connections”.
There have been numerous accounts of how social isolation, due to the advancement of technology, has affected the well-being and mental compacity of certain individuals. As technology advances, the divide and communication issues grow as physical interactions slowly diminish. There are studies that show how distant people can be with heavy usage of technological advances which in turn creates loneliness and depression what can also lead to failing health and ultimately lead to death.
Technological social isolation is a state one gets in after being consumed by the idea of technological advances. Some would say the technology would bring us together as a society, but others would argue that it creates more distance from reality. “Twelve per cent of Americans have no talk compatriots,' Pew said. 'Few Americans are positively socially segregated. Just 6 per cent of the grown-up populace has nobody with whom they can talk about essential matters or who they consider to be 'particularly critical' in their life.' Social isolation can be translated into a realm of being an introvert. People can find themselves feeling withdrawn from the world, isolated from reality which can be quite damaging to one’s health. Some find themselves at a level where only through technology can they communicate or express themselves and impossible to do physically and in person.
Individuals usually have direct contact with those who are close to them within a time frame of at least 210 days. 'They have cellular telephone contact on 195 days of the year; landline telephone contact on 125 days; content informing contact on the cell telephone 125 days; email contact 72 days; texting contact 55 days; contact through person to person communication Web locales 39 days; and contact by means of letters or cards on 8 days.”
The 2006 report found that a quarter of Americans said they have nobody to converse with about individual inconveniences. Lynn Lovin-Smith, a Duke University teacher and one of three creators of the 2006 study distributed in the American Sociological Review, said Internet utilization was 'just specified as one of a few expansive social changes in the previous 25 years that may have affected social ties. Longer driving separations, more individuals living alone, and lower willful gathering enrolments are other (components) that we said. 'It's workable for the Internet and other portable advances to change our public and its social fabric regardless of the possibility that individual engineering clients stay associated,' she said in an email meeting. 'Vehicles and landline phones have had such an effect by making our neighborhoods more expelled from work and giving us a chance to stay in contact all the more consistently with individuals who are geographically distant.
Today, many of our modern tools and inventions are used in a different array of situations where it is difficult for just anyone to understand. Engineering and technological advances suggests that todays ideal life is defined by our utilization of modern gadgets and applications. When humanity first set foot on the Earth, a great many years back, engineering was utilized for survival. The further humankind advanced the further technology advanced with us.
There are different contributing factors and variables that create this social isolation in our world today. It also persists because schools don’t have the proper resources and procedures in place for teaching about its effects on people today daily. While this is new, and we have come to an age where technology is so readily available, more research and study needs to be conducted so that data can be retrieved about the true transformation of technology addiction which generates social isolation.
Social isolation is a huge risk today because of parenting at home. I believe it starts at home where supervision and limiting time on the computer can change and shape the behavior of today’s children. Often children today stay at home and glue themselves to the computer or mobile device such as IPAD’s and other similar handhelds and refuse to be physically active and become so introvertly absorbed into the technology at hand. I believe that through monitoring and limiting oneself from technology can make a huge different in health.
In the world today, people use unnecessary applications technology that strongly encourage social instability and isolation. In doing so, the world has fallen through this haze and complexity that technology is making our lives easier and more accessible but in fact doing the opposite and making humans more lazy and unaccountable for our actions. We find ourselves relying more on technology, while there are great technological advances that do improve life, to a point that we are becoming more disconnected from reality. True connection is through the physical labor and time to spend and reach out to one another where technology should only be used as a means of tools to connect. Technology should be used to improve the socialization for the people in the world instead of singling out and discriminating those who aren’t that adapt to our technological advances.
In conclusion, technology has a strong influence on today’s social interaction and has increased the amount of isolation amongst people worldwide. On a daily basis the majority of the world will find themselves online glued to their social media outlets and applications as a main source of interaction and communication instead of physical interaction. The way technology progressed, these changes are not avoidable. In many ways there are some pro’s of the advancement of todays technology. Before the internet information was limited but now we are all connected in a global level.
