The Downsides Of Part-Time Jobs For Students
Nowadays, as the living cost gets higher and higher, more and more people choose to take one or even more part-time jobs to make ends meet. However, this also influents many students, especially university students. So as a result, not only adults take part-time job out of full-time job, some university students also take part-time jobs out of their full-time work (study). From my perspective, it is quite not a good phenomenon.
First, students most take part-time jobs for more pocket money to perchase something they want regardless of their parents’ attitude. Sometimes it can give them some advantage such as getting something useful to their study, but sometimes it will also let them spend more energy on part-time instead of on study. For example, many UM students have part-time, which usually work in the evening, that means they need to sacrifice their sleeping time to deal with it, not only for working but also for the way to work and back home. In these situations, students spend little time on their academic field, and as a result, most of them will get an academic grade that is not so beautiful. Besides, students usually put part-time and social skills improvement together. Is it true?
Actually, not every part-time job is good for social skills. For example, many students think salesperson is a nice work for practice their social skills because there are lots of people you have to make contact with, even though it’s just a short time. However, people working there consider themselves as machine, meaning that they just work like a machine, no too much communication with customers except those needed, such as “what else do you need” and “the price of this is XX”. It shows that students who take part-time for social skills improve may get disappointed — whether get improved in social skills depends both on their type of work and their own characters.
Anyway, some will say that part-time can also improve other ability besides social skill. As for this, it’s the same reason. It depends on both type of work and individual characters. Imagine if a shy student work part-time as storehouse manager, it’s really quite hard for him to improve his own social skill and communication abilities. Instead, doing as volunteer gets a better improvement in personal skills than part-time jobs.
All in all, it’s unwise for university students to take part-time, at least when weekdays. Taking too much time and returns not equal are the most important reasons. So against university students to take part-time job is my opinion, or they can do it on vacation, at least not in school days, it costs too much.
