The Effect Of AI On Job Opportunities In The Mid-21st Century
The most commonly asked question is what is AI? AI is simply artificial intelligence; more specifically based on the Cambridge Dictionary, is the use of computers programs that have some of the qualities of the human mind, such as the ability to understand languages, recognize pictures, and learn from experience. The term artificial intelligence was created and pioneered by John McCarthy, at Dartmouth college, who was one of the key founders in the discipline. Artificial Intelligence has paved the way for the future making strides forward in technology and automated systems. This AI has many effects on the world today as we know it, both positive and negative. It may create all these new opportunities in the twenty first century, but at the same time it could take away some important ones as well. Regarding how it is going to integrate into everyday life with people, we go to the work force. AI is becoming used commonly in industries and many different aspects of the busy world. It could possibly take over many jobs in our society leaving people without such jobs that are much needed for them. So, AI poses an important question for the future, how will this artificial intelligence affect job opportunities in mid-21st century?
There has been a lot of speculation and debate regarding this topic. Many people believe that the new technology will hurt theirs jobs, while other believe that it will only make things increasingly more efficient and grow our society. Before assuming about the effect, it will have, its best to explore both sides of the argument and really see if the AI will impact the professional environment that this world relies so heavily on. First off, at this point it is best to see which jobs or tasks the artificial intelligence is capable of fulfilling or creating. Looking into this there are so many new chances for work and many spots that the AI could take over. One example of this is in education field. Moving towards the future there are many online courses that are now being used more and more. It is changing how students connect with their classes through a computer screen. It gives them a very interactive way of learning with new possibilities. The artificial intelligence learns from the students making its curriculum individual to each learner. It can also take place of tutors choosing learning styles and choosing assignments that can help cater to the student. So artificial intelligence is slowly having a large impact on education and people in that field.
An alternate example of AI is in Human Resources. It might sound weird putting a computer in charge of humans, but this AI does not replace the worker rather is an extension of the technology they already use. The AI does two major things in HR, it first rules out any biased that may be used with a human picking new candidate for employees. Second, the AI help look through all the applications finding the person with the best qualifications, it looks at all the details like reference letters and social media accounts, it really does a lot in ways of assisting the department. Based on a Harvey Nash HR Survey, “Technology as a whole is revolutionizing how today's HR departments are operating, with 60 per cent of respondents saying the importance of Technology Enabled HR has increased within the past year”. Artificial Intelligence can really help with the future of human resources.
Lastly, another example of AI in our society is just all about data, collecting it, storing it, and using it. People might think that AI is only about talking jobs but really in this case it is about improving them and assisting in everyday life. Systems like Siri on the iPhone which recognize speech and depict the meanings of those words, getting smarter with each spoken phrase. Making life much easier and more efficient all around. Those are only a few of the roles that artificial intelligence is able to play, there is a whole world of integrations that they can have in our society. An extensive long list of possibilities that are mostly already in use. It is amazing just how much we rely on such technology. The examples that were provided above may give the impression that there is nothing but positives in the artificial intelligence community, but there is plenty to be skeptical about as well. “About 47 percent of current jobs in the USA are at high risk of computerization over the next 20 years, according to a study by researchers at Oxford University and Deloitte”, this means that much of those jobs could also be replaced with computerization such as AI. There is one thing for certain and that it the fact that some jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence and some already currently have been. Based on what Steven A. Cohen says in this article “automation is coming but not here yet and that it will be a while before the technology displaces humans, ” there is a future where automation will come but not anytime soon. Even for how amazingly technologically advanced we may become people still need jobs to make money and provide for themselves and it’s important that they have such opportunities in the future. Jobs need to be available no matter how easy and efficient AI might be computers aren’t always perfect and that human connection is still very much important in society. Referring back to that article it says that “Facebook requires zero workers to manage a social network for more than 1 billion people, ” which if you think about it is incredible, but wouldn’t it be better if some jobs were created at Facebook based on how many people use their website, those opportunities could be wasted for the people that desperately need them and can’t get those jobs because of AI.
Technology is ever advancing no matter how slowly; every single profession and field of study will gain progress with such things like AI. As the world spins around the better and better AI will get, taking jobs and tasks away from hard working people. “By 2020 AI will eliminate 1. 8 million jobs” according to Gartner which is a global research company. This is a big eye opener for the peoples whose jobs will be replaced with ultimately computers. It is scary to think about looking into the future and what it will bring with it. With the future also brings positivity and hopefulness not just negativity. Jobs will be created using artificial intelligence, this word is used a lot throughout this paper because it is an important part of what the whole argument is all about, but really it is about how much it will provide compared to what is taken away; if the opportunity cost is for the better.
AI is in fact a good thing for more people than it would hurt. Gartner also researched and found out that “AI Will Create 2. 3 Million Jobs in 2020, ” meaning that it will create more jobs than it will replace. Although some of the same jobs will be taken, other jobs will be made, people have to adapt to the changing world. Technology is the future of what our society is becoming, AI could be that very catalyst to lead us there. The jobs that will be available in the future will in fact be jobs nothing like the ones we see today. So many companies are looking into this AI running what they already have created making it automated and self-sufficient and for all these companies doing so people will be needed to look after these AI and machinery making sure they run efficiently and smoothly. Rather than having more physical labor jobs it’s like looking after and maintaining the tools that will do the jobs for us. The AI might be ever improving technology but it always will have its flaws, we invented it and it needs to be looked after just as well.
