The Effect Of Color On The Surface Temperature

Did you know that darker colors absorb more heat than lighter colors? Darker colors absorb wavelengths and don't reflect any. If you were to wear black clothes, your clothes would absorb the heat and make your clothes hotter than they would be if you were to wear a lighter color. The feeling of being hot can be an uncomfortable feeling so wearing lighter clothing would be a better option. I want to find out if that applies to paint as well. My science question is: Do the different colors of paint on a box affect the temperature?

Paint is made of pigment, resin, solvent, and additives. Pigment is what gives the paint its color and texture. Resin is what holds everything together so the ingredients don't separate. Solvent acts like a carrier for the rest of ingredients that makes up the paint. The additives paint consists of are penetrol, floetrol, and mildewcide. Penetrol, which is used occasionally, is used to help improve the flow and penetration of oil based coatings that are used. Floetrol is basically the latex version of penetrol, it extends the dry time. Mildewcide is used in paint to prevent mildew from forming inside of it. For these reasons, it is important to use all of these ingredients to get a perfect paint. Pigment is divided into 2 groups, the ‘Prime Pigments’ and ‘Extender Pigments’. The ‘Prime Pigments’ group includes pigments such as Titanium Dioxide (white), Chrome Green Oxide, yellow and red iron Oxides, ext. ‘Extender Pigments’ include pigments such as Calcite (Calcium Carbonate),Talc (Magnesium Silicate), Mica, and Barytes (Barium Sulphate).

Although pigment is used in paint, it used to be very dangerous, it included lead, chromates, and asbestos. If you are exposed to high amounts of lead, it is likely you would suffer anemia, weakness, and brain and kidney damage, which can lead to death in a matter of days. Asbestos fibres can be easily inhaled and carried into the lower regions of your lungs which can cause fibrotic lung disease. So, it’s a good thing dangerous pigment is in rare use and outlawed in most places around the world. If you would like to avoid making paint the hard, but good way, you can make your own play paint at home. All you need is to blend ½ of flour with ½ cup of salt. Once that is all nice and blended, add one cup of water to get it into the right consistency. Lastly, you can add watercolor, or drops of food coloring to give your paint the perfect color you want it to have! Although this paint is not going to be able to last on things such as wood, plastic, glass, or fabric, it is fun to let children use on paper. Neon paint is made up of the same things as the other paint besides the pigment. The pigment that is added into neon paint consists of molecules that are very efficient at absorbing high frequency light releasing lower frequency light. Another world for neon is fluorescent, fluorescent colors are unnaturally bright because of the pigment.

It is very important to use paint primer before painting! It will assure that the paint would last way longer than it would without it. Oil based paint normally last up to 15 years while acrylic paint normally lasts up to 10 years. If the paint you are using and it is a little old, it will still be good, even if you have to peel off some dried paint, just as long as there is no lumps inside of the paint, it will still work. So, if you use primer before painting something, it will last longer.

Cardboard boxes are made from a flute, which is recycled paper, this is the middle part of the cardboard. Then, the recycled paper gets squished between two liners. It is most common that the liners are made of recycled content or from old cardboard. So basically, cardboard is made up of recycled content, which is great for our environment.

If you would like to speed up the time your paint dries, this is how you do it. Typically paint dries from 6-8 hours for oil based paint and about 4 hours for latex based paint (on a wall). To speed up the drying time, you can turn on a fan and make it faced the object to are painting. Also, apply light coats, this helps because the thicker the paint is, the longer it takes to dry. Another way is to keep the room warm and keep the humidity low. This helps because the more muggy the room is, the paint dries more slowly. Lastly, you can paint one side at a time on the object you are painting. This helps because by the time you finish painting one side and continue on, the other sides would most likely be dried and ready to put on a next coat. Using these methods are a great way to make paint dry faster.

These are the different types of paint, paint finishers, and advantages. There are water based paint, which dries faster, color doesn't fade or yellow in the sunlight, can be applied to almost every surface, it is easy to clean up with water, and has no mildew growth. There is also oil based paints which are good in high-moisture rooms, brush strokes fix themselves in to create a smooth finish, and dries glossy. Some paint finishers are matte paint, which helps hide imperfections and offers great depth in color. There is also semi-gloss paint which is the most reflective and can stand up to multiple cleanings. The last one is eggshell paint which has same reflectivity. These are some of the best paint products.

I believe that darker colors of paint will make the temperature hotter because darker colors do absorb more heat so i think it will apply to paint as well. Since the pigment that is used in paint comes in a verity in color, some light and some dark, I do think the darker colors will become hotter.
