The Eudora Welty's Childhood In One Writer’s Beginning

Eudora Welty was born in Mississippi Jackson in the 1900s whereas she grew up reading books in a doom-like library owned by a frightening librarian. Welty often entered this doom to read and learn with the help of her mother. She then later became an admired writer when she grew up. Eudora Welty wrote a memoir called One Writer’s Beginning allowing the reader to get a peak of her childhood experiences. By relating the people who were most important in her childhood who greatly affected her future writing; from the intimidating qualities of Mrs. Calloway and the forward thinking practices of her mother, to her own insatiability for books.

Mrs. Calloway’s unusual character have crafted Eudora Welty’s writing greatly by impersonating her appear like a mythical villain. Because of Mrs. Calloway’s malevolent nature, Welty didn’t know anyone who existed “without being afraid of Mrs. Calloway”. As it is in mythical stories Mrs. Calloway is constantly being ghosted all over Jackson. Anyone who has known Mrs. Calloway since a kid have become delusional and depicted her as a dragon. Regardless of knowing how petrifying Mrs. Calloway is, Welty however instead of turning back on the terrifying descriptions she's heard about her; she doesn’t back down, but she persists on to claim the “treasure” she seeks. In spite of the fact that Mrs. Calloway is described as an immoral human being, Welty has been crafted into a respected writer. Welty has also designated Mrs. Calloway as someone who possesses “dragon eyes”. Everyone knows dragons are extremely frightening mythical animals in fairy tale stories who often sleep with their gold that they adore so much. In this case the dragon is portrayed as Mrs. Calloway and she is protecting the books that she adores so much. The “dragons” books contains very powerful knowledge however everyone is scared of attempting to even check a few books out. Nevertheless, Welty continued to strive forward and stood up against the “dragon” day after day obtaining more and more knowledge which further allowed her to become a stronger writer. Welty then described Mrs. Calloway as a “witch”, her voice could be heard all over the library. Where only witches have the powers to do so. Witches would often think that they could scare away any nine year old girl, but this nine year old girl strived forward claiming her “candy.” Everyone would know in fictional stories witches are mostly scary old women who scare away kids with just their looks and if kids can get pass them they would normally be rewarded with candy. In this case Mrs. Calloway would be characterized as the creepy witch and the candy would be the powers of the books that Welty is driven for. Welty’s mythical villain idea elucidated Mrs. Calloway’s unethical personality that have further enhanced her skills as a writer.

Welty’s mother’s courageous nature have transformed Eudora Welty’s writing skills a significant amount by standing up to Mrs. Calloway and defying her ignorant rules. Due to Welty’s mother’s fearless character Welty was able to have her “own library card to check out books” for herself. As it is in Jackson, no one was able to defy Mrs. Calloway’s own rules and allow their own child to do whatever they’d like.
