The Factors Influencing Students To Cheat
From my perspective, I believe that cheating is cultural, with social, cultural, educational, and/or economics as large factors that influence students to cheat. Plagiarism has become very easy for students to use due to advanced technology. However, not everyone knows what constitutes as plagiarism, and how severe the punishments are. Pressure from everyone to succeed makes students cave into the temptation of plagiarism. There are many factors that contribute to international students cheating.
International students aren't aware of the consequences and what plagiarism is defined as. The article by Kia Farhang, For some international students, 'plagiarism' is a foreign word, states that in a couple 'cultures even consider citing sources to be disrespectful,' (23) which complicates cultural and educational factors from within the different countries. I believe Students moving to completely different countries don't have much time to immerse themselves in the foreign educational systems and social cultures. In the Globe and Mail article, one of the students didn't know that he wasn't citing his work properly. 'The more you write your answers exactly the way they say it, the better chance you have of getting an A' (Bradshaw 10). I believe that it is harder for international students to grasp every aspects of a new education system right away. I never really started learning about plagiarism until the end of grade 7, as a result I struggled with writing my essay's at the start of high school due to all of the new information about writing. Throughout high school, we are taught and practice how to properly cite and format, while international students are taught different lengths and structure of cheating.
The cultural, social, and educational pressure of doing well and furthering your education in a foreign place in hopes to further their careers. For as long as I can remember school has been preparing you for the next step in your educational care. Whether it's going into a different grade or transitioning to high school or university, educators have put pressure on you to overachieve in order to keep succeeding. While social and educational factors are very important, cultural factors play a colossal factor in how international students are persieved. '[I]nternational students as strugglers with a mere motive to pass and a threat to the Australian academic standard' (Bexley, Vu 16). This excerpt of the article is a concerning factor of biased reports. I consider that international student who are targeting by biased reporting are more likely to struggle due to the idea of their work being scrutinized for plagiarism. The concept is close in relation to being scrutinized at the airport, they racially profile you before you can prove them otherwise.
Due to the increasingly high amounts of online based programs, it is making cheating easier for This unfortunately plays a prominent role in how easily accessible it is for students to play off someone else's work as their own. Many people from these websites often advertise themselves as someone with experience in what they're looking for; as well as more affordable for students. In the article by Brendan O'Malley, Cheating by International Students Rampant at British University, Says Newspaper, Robert Clarke told the Hindustan Times that these workers 'have degrees from UK universities , so students hire them with the knowledge that they are familiar with the UK educational system'. Another very popular way of cheating is getting someone else to sit in and take exams for you. This way of cheating I believe is getting very common and easy to start doing for students who have to take entrance exams or finals, where the students remain anonymous. In France, a student's mother was caught taking a very important A level equivalent examination. In my opinion these methods are starting to get very popular as these entrance exams define your future educational goals.
I agree with the points of view of all four of the articles, however, schools should have an information session with their international students to help them adapt to their new surroundings. Cheating has become something that students are tempted with constantly and everyone should be informed with how serious the consequences can default to.
