The Impact Of Abuse And Parental Neglect On A Child’s Future Adulthood
Child endangerment and abuse can have many negative symptoms and ultimately mental health problems, in which these problems can affect them in his or her adult life. If a child is treated with care, he or she will grow up wanting to respect others, and empathize with others. It goes without saying that abuse at a young age, can and will affect a person as an adolescent and as an adult. The question is, How? How does child abuse effect and parental neglect affect people in adulthood?
There have been countless studies on children, who have come from abusive or broken homes. Most of the studies focus on how that affects them and their families as they enter into adulthood. Researchers, also like to focus on three perspectives when it comes to child abuse: the mental, behavioral, and physical effects that follow. In studies researchers gather data in order to find out how the past experiences of child abuse and parental abandonment are correlated to long-term mental health issues. Researchers Afifi, Boman, Fleisher, and Sareen found that bad mental health are the common outcomes of child abuse and neglect, in adults. Kathleen Kendell-Tackett, in her research also found that childhood abuse put people at risk of depression and ptsd, which can lead to suicidal thoughts and even suicide. In 2007, Cathy Widom, K. DuMont, and Sally Caja conducted a study and found that those who were physically abused or neglected as child were more likely to develop mental disorders in adolescence and early adulthood. Also in 2012, a study conducted by Luisa Sugaya and her counterparts reported that those who had experienced physical abuse as a child were at a greater risk of having psychiatric disorders in adulthood than who did not. These studies suggests that child can lead to many psychological problems.
Another thing that comes with child abuse, that researchers often study, is the behavior issues that follow. Violent behavior is often a long term effect of child abuse and neglect. Researchers Emma Bevan and Daryl Higgins studied how abuse can lead to violence in relationships. They found that child neglect and parental incoherency were connected to the rate of spousal abuse. According to researchers Cindy Miller-Perrins and Robin Perrin, those who have encountered abuse or witness domestic violence at a young age can be more likely to be violent and be involved in delinquent acts. In another research, that Cathy Widom conducted, she compared a group of adults with a pst that involved child neglect with a group who did not have a the same history. She found that adults the abused individuals were more likely to be arrested, and show signs of criminal behavior. Therefore, it can be concluded that those who have been abused have a greater risk of being violent and partaking in criminal activities. Researchers also study how abuse can also lead to various physical health problem. In a research by Nathalie Sachs-Ericsson, and others, including Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, they found that most adults who survived childhood abuse had more medical complications than those who were not. In 2009, researchers, C. Stetler and HL Wegman, found that adults who had a adverse childhood had an increased risk of developing problems relating to the brain, and intestine, brain, as well as the lungs. In a study researchers, E. Cannon, M. L. Anderson and others, reported that those were abused as a child, and those who were exposed to neglect were more likely to have a larger chance of negative physical health issues which will lead to a greater utilization of healthcare services in adulthood.
Researchers Tiffany Watts- English, Beverly Fortson Nicole Gible, Stephen R. Hooper, and Michael De Bellis concluded that to child abuse can lead to difficults in the immune system, which could lead to bad health as an adult. In conclusion, each prospective have been analyzed by quite a few researchers. This research is evident that most children that are abused will experience some form of physical, mental, or, behavioral complications.
The mental effects of abuse can be linked be to behavior effects of abuse. For instance, bad mental health can lead lead to suicidal behavior. There are no positive effects of abuse or neglect. In reading, I have gathered that children from abusive and broken homes will most likely have a troubled adulthood. However, some may argue that everyone that are victims of abuse will turn to trouble. In some cases may be difficult to make the link between abuse and the effects of abuse. Researchers don’t take into account the environment outside of the household or the economic restrains that some children may have also faced as children. On the other hand, this does not mean that abuse does not make a big impact on a person’s life.
