The Importance of Common Core Standards in Mathematics in Educational Process
As teachers/educator must always make sure that we prepared our students with values, goal and real-world learning experiences. It doesn’t matter the student comes from are doing everything in their power to graduate from high school and head to college for preparation for their career and their adult life. Schooling in general, and teacher education, have rarely occupied a critical space in contemporary culture. Such endeavors as they presently exist are damagingly bereft of both social conscience and social consciousness. For this assignment I had to redesign a lesson plan or curriculum that I previously completed in another course during this program. For the students of the 21st Century learning the design was to redesign the outcomes of all the students and the support system. The different outcomes of the students should be on the child not the one size fits all system. Everything that comes from the student’s creativity should be based solely on the individual child. All children have their own individual learning style.
One thing now is that the assessments are at a higher thinking level with a higher number of questions that have constructive response nothing like the older way of multiple choices. I think that if all components of the 21st century learning was included in the assessment all the expectations of the students would have been higher and the goals achieved would have be greater. Children’s creativity would be greater because it would not be limited on how the students think. The students would have a bigger opportunity to express all their thoughts instead of doing the thinking lie everyone else. Another thing that would improve would be the problem-solving skills because they would do it individuality.
Redesign Support System
Redesigning the support system and adding more of the technology-based learning would only enhance the learning for all the students of the 21st century. Students like and enjoy learning from their laptops, iPad or Chrome books because they are used to the technology that we now have instead of the books like we had before. Students that can connect problems solving to real life problems are able to make a connection through their critical thinking skills. Students that make personal based connection are more likely you stick to it that students that use make believe problems that might never happen, and they cannot make that connection. Mathematical understanding and the procedural skills are equally important, and both are assessable while using mathematical tasks of enough richness”. CCSS Mathematical standards that teachers must follow are specific guidelines to ensure that all standards are met. These consist of very specific skills and concepts that students are always expected to master by the end of each school year, but also include the content standards and Mathematical practices. “The Common Core State Standards in mathematics represent a shift in instructional emphasis toward higher levels of cognitive demand”. The purpose for all these standards is to provide the students with understanding of what knowledge, abilities, and capabilities are expected of them”. It helps assists teachers and the parents to teach students what they need to learn to help them perform and compete in everything they do. “These standards fare aligned to the expectations of colleges, workforce training programs, and employers”. The students will be prepared to face the challenges of the real world because of the knowledge they have acquired.
The CCSS has a set of different expectations that all the teachers must always try their best to implement within each of the lesson to ensure that all the students are always prepared for the curriculum. CCSS, however, does create a differentiated lesson to meet all the needs of students.
Analyzing all the differentiated instructions, it is a hands-on decision-making process and it should always be implemented. Teachers/educators that use the different strategies can be implemented within each lesson. If they are utilized correctly it can improve each child’s abilities, their knowledge, and their unique learning styles. Adding more hands-on activities or technology-based learning activities it can improve the students learning.
- Matching, memory puzzles
- Adaptive technology where students can access apps such as Chrome books or iPad
- Hands-on activities such as counters
- Tiered Instruction
- Mathematical games that are aligned with CCSS
In conclusion, in order to apply all the differentiated instructions correctly, teachers/educators should always be trained on how to differentiate instructions for their students in the classroom. We must utilize the assessments to their fullest potential in order to get a better understanding of what can be done to help students be successfully. Educators must find ways to teach their students the same material, but on the individual student readiness levels. Also creating many different activities to suit every child’s need to move around, hands on experience, and visually to enhance every learning opportunity that is available to them.
