When Disaster Strikes: The Vital Role of Preparedness

The Filipino’s should be aware that Disaster and hazard is a serious disruption of a community. It can lead people suffer from disaster because many of them will be affected like losses of properties, resources, loss of life such as families and love ones. In importance of disaster preparedness essay this topic is discussed. Everyone should know the importance of disaster prevention so that we can avoid distractive disasters. Filipinos should also know the importance of disaster preparedness because being prepared is the biggest chance that you are safe and smallest destruction of your resources. Disaster preparedness includes setting up early, warning system, planning, stock pilling of equipment and supplies, creating coordination and communication mechanism, evacuation protocols, other training and fields exercises.

The Third vulnerable worldwide is Philippines because of the frequency of calamities such as typhoons, floods, landslides and earthquake which reveals from the United Nations University Institute for environment and human safety (UNU-EHS). So that most of the people, city, province and barangays are participating the Disaster Preparedness Programs.

According to Robert John O. Robas, Philippines is one of the country being prone within experiencing disaster and dealing with responsing and managing disaster. Communities and government think, act and respond to the current and immerging risk that continually face them. Disaster Risk Management is not only focus on intervention and control of naturala phenomena, but also modification of existing land use practices, activities involving economic that generate hazard, occupation practices and vulnerabilities, it also focus on strengthening the application of risk reduction criteria in developing planning. Being prepared leads you to be more ready in any disaster that will come. The impact of disasters, natural and human-induced, concerns various facilities, agriculture and the lives of people who are being affected by disaster.

Cited from Dep-Ed order No. 044 S. 2018 Disaster Risk Reduction and Management is the systematic process of using administrative directives, organizations, and operational skills, and capacities to implement strategies, policies and improved coping capacities to lessen the adverse impacts of hazards and the possibility of disaster. It can also provide preventions, preparedness, response and also the rehabilitation or recovery. This Disaster Risk Reduction and Management will lead us to grow bigger and deeper understanding in disasters.

Filipinos are among one of the top 10 most number of people in the world affected with natural calamities. It is logical to assume that disaster response management in Philippines would have improved over the years. Occurences of disasters have been increasing worldwide over time which damages resources and livelihood significantly. Disasters such as flood, riverbank and cyclone are gradually intensifying by climate change.

Philippines experienced a lot of disaster and they are aware of it. That’s why the government lead their country of society to help them on their basic needs. The government also provides them a shelter/home. According to Dr. Murphy P. Mohamed in year of 2013 flooding is the most frequently experienced phenomenon in the Philippines. Philippines experience this disaster if every heavy rain or typhoon happen. There is a big possibility that flood will happen near the beach or rivers. According to Dr. Murphy P. Mohamed, the Philippines also encountered strong earthquake. In our area, Batangas experienced earthquake last year with 5.5 magnitude. All of the news in televisions are all about the damages of the earthquake including landslide and damage to property and resources. The locals in Batangas are highly affected to this disaster. They didn’t know how to start again and back to their normal lives. All of the government in Batangas help and support them to their needs. Also they help them to start and recover from the disaster happened in a particular area.

Due to different disaster many lives will be in danger. The DRRM priorites are understanding the disaster risk, strengthening disaster governance to manage disaster risk, investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience and enhancing disaster, preparedness for effective response. Disaster must have actions. It is a type that may cause to many loss of lives. However, everyone must be aware on it. It must have the connection of government in order to prevent disaster and to recover the facilities that are prone to disaster. In many countries, Philippines is the most prone area of disaster and no one can stop that, the only thing that we can do is to be alert and make an action after the disaster.
