The Importance & Structure Of A Narrative Text

Argumentative or persuasive texts and narrative texts plays a huge role in our lives due to that fact it is all around us, it is what we have to encounter every day. In a persuasive or argumentative texts, we endeavor to persuade others to concur with our actualities, share our qualities, acknowledge our arguments and ends. This type of text uses rhetorical language.

Rhetorical language is defined as a device used to influence or convince individuals by writing or speaking adequately regardless whether the information is true or false. It is a reflection of what characterizes a good speech and that is persuading the public. In retrospective, many people used rhetorical language in the year 400 BC and it was given a bad reputation because of the sophists seeing that they didn’t believe that truth and ethics were a concern.

The sophists thought that the only importance of rhetorics were the effects that it had on the audiences and the beauty of the speech, not the importance of the topic. They would have arguments that were nonsense just for the sake of it. There are three types of speeches, one being judicial: which is about an event that happened in the past, it decides whether a person is guilty or innocent. Next is demonstrative, meaning an event happening in the present, which aims to either praise or to blame an individual. At last is deliberative, which is about an event that will happen in the future, this is used to convince that one’s decision is the wisest. All of these tend to impact the ethics and morals of the audiences.

On the other hand in narrative texts, is a way of storytelling, which can be can be written to inspire, educate or entertain. The story starts with an expository approach that reveals the plot, settings and characters. The story is intended to lead to a vital end or an important acknowledgment in life, also known as the theme of the story. Narrative is found everywhere due to the fact that it helps us make sense of the events happening in our lives, in fact, narratives help us learn from experiences whether it is our own or someone else’s.

Every day we see different individuals and we tend to narrate their lives by their exterior appearances, so we can put things in a plausible story to make sense of what is going on. For example, if there is a couple sitting on a bench apart from each other and the female puts her hand on her head and the male is looking frustrated at the ground, we may infer that these two individuals had a fight because the boyfriend cheated on her with another girl and he decides to confess his wrong doings.

Humans do this since the ideas in our brain are instant and we want to know what is going on in order to not be confused. To know the structure of a narrative text, we must know what the term narrative means. Narrative is defined as a perceptual activity that organizes data into a special pattern which represents and explains experience. It is an essential human procedure because humans do this automatically. A keep thing to remember is that narratives aren’t always fictional, it can be non-fiction too.
