The Internet Of Things In Health Sector
Since the rise in technology each and every field of science, economics and overall all the facilities and businesses that we see around us has been affected by the technology which is growing on a perpetual scale. The field of medical science is also no exception. The new and innovative gadgets has been introduced in hospitals and medical departments which enable doctors to operate and diagnose the disease much more efficiently than it was ever before. The drawback of such progressive technology is the cost of such machines and the lack of portability and easy operating facility or in other words less people are skilled or financially stable enough to afford such equipments.
Internet of things (IOT) is used in remote system which enables the users to retrieve the information from the cloud where information is stored at anytime and anywhere where internet is available. The system gives run time values from the patients body thus each and every change in the body is informed to the user within seconds. Arduino Mege 2560 is used in the system to retrieve the data from the sensors and to place it in the cloud and thus the retrieval of data from the cloud.
Connectivity has a great importance in any stable system to work properly. The connectivity problems between the patients and the doctors or medical officials may become the main reason for fatal diseases and deaths. The proper on time diagnosis and proper analysis can do wonders as the correct on time analysis of the condition becomes the basis for cure and care to be lead on in the future. The Health Monitoring System (HMS) is the system that consists of number of sensors that monitor various aspects of the human body and the environment that surrounds the body as the ECG, thermometer, and BP operatus monitors the heartbeat, temperature and the blood flow, whereas the hygrometer monitors the status of air surrounding the body. The features of such sensors are given below:
- They're wearable as the ECG sensor can worn on the finger and thus they are portable.
- They merge with the current technology in the medical science as the readings from any sensor can now be converted to digital signals and be controlled and monitored easily.
- They are easy to use as to be used by naive users.
- The sensors are power efficient, run time precise and durable with higher reliability.
The importance of health can be understood by anyone. Health is wealth and every luxury in life can be proven tasteless in bad health. In order to care for the health and to prevent fatal disease like cancer, diabetes, hepatitis and many other, intensive care is required. The technology has proven innovative in every field of life. The medical science have done great works to improve the living standard of humans e.g. the discovery of antibiotics and latest medicines have increased the life expectancy to a very higher level. The life in the medieval or older times was very hard and short lived, So, medical science has done grea wonders for mankind.
Unfortunately despite of all such efforts and improvement in the living standard the cost of life is increasing day by day. The life saving operations and drugs are available but on a very high cost which is very hard to afford by a person with average income. The people in tne rural areas have very less approach to latest wonders of medical science due to lack of availability and higher cost. The need of the hour is to introduce such gadgets which are very easy to use as to be used even by naive person, effective as to save lives and be precisely accurate in it's functionalities and analysis. A gadget should be cheap enough to afford and effective equally. Many of the casualties occur when the disease is not been diagnosed at the right time and the stage of recovery is passed and the fatal death becomes inevitable. So, the status of human body is required on every passing second. The sensors are available in market that tells the status but their use and the reading funding skill is rather for professionals.
The Internet of Things or IOT is the technology that makes it possible for any situation to be controlled and manipulate on the run time. In the field of medical science the sensors would be placed on the patients body. The readings given by the sensors will be converted from analogue to digital signals and that digital signal will be sent to the cloud via Internet. The dats stored in the cloud can be manipulated and analysed at any moment. As a result the status of the patients body can be monitored on every second, just like a live cricket match where the current status of the match is monitored by the television audience on the run time with an interval of few seconds.
Following are the conditions that the IOT sensing system supports:
- To monitor the reaction of patients body when a new drug is introduced in the body to ensure the blood pressure, temperature and overall status of the body to be normal.
- To monitor the status of the heart or to check every possible scenario that can cause heart attack. In other words the current cardiac condition is analysed to predict the future possibilities.
- The overall working condition of human organs are also suoported by the system by which every organ working flow can be studied on every human activity e.g. running, eating, speaking etc.
- To monitor the body of the older patients who are old enough to take care of themselves. Any peculiarities can be diagnosed on the run time to avoid any fatal conditions.
- It can be used on the athletes to guide them in their routines as which activity has better or worse effects on their bodies e.g. the diet, the daily routine, workouts etc.
The good support and connection of internet is very vital for the system. The availability of the internet is of higher standard and speed in the developed countries where the cost of having an internet is cheap enough. The system would work perfectly in developed counties. Many countries have dedicated their efforts in bringing the portable monitoring systems on a very affordable prices as to be afforded by the average people with less luxuries. Many projects have been launched that provides such services at free of cost. The system can work in two ways:
- Single monitoring system
- Multiple monitoring system
Single monitoring
In single monitoring system the sensors monitor only one entity e.g. ECG sensors which monitor the heart beat and find the amount of oxygen in the blood. The live status is updated every second.
Multiple monitoring
Multiple monitoring is the support of multiple sensors that give the readings and all those readings are converted to digital signals which then travel to the cloud and stored in relative folders respectively. The status in the Intense care unit (ICU) or High dependant unit can define it where the intense monitoring on every organ of the patient is requied e.g. heart beat, temperature, blood pressure etc. Here multiple sensors work at the same time and the monitoring is done and analysed by IOU at anywhere with the Internet connection.
