The Main Types Of New Media
Media Texts have developed since the 1990 with the internet. This is why these Media Texts are called New Media because of the internet. The New Media is accessed using the internet through computers or smartphones as they have internet. The New Media include; Websites, Blogs, Vlogs, Online Games, Podcasts and Apps.
Websites were created and went live on August 6, 1991. It was created by Tim Berners-Lee. It was accessed by a small audience of researchers, but it wasn’t until 1993 when web browser Mosaic was released. It was created and developed to share information between scientists in universities and institutes around the world.
Blogs were created in 1994 and was created by Justin Hall who was a college student. The first blog was ‘Links. net’. They weren’t called blogs then but it was his personal homepage, but in 1997 the term ‘weblog was invented. They were created as it was a brilliant way to promote yourself, promote your business, promote your product or even to promote your service. It was also created to sell items online using your blog but also for information purposes.
Vlogs were created on January 2, 2000 by Adam Kontras. This was a video that was attached to the blog. The vlog was a form of a blog but it was in video form. It was instead of writing about your day it was filming about it. Online games began around 1990 and due to the rise of 3D and multimedia, popularity and technology grew.
MUD (Multi-user dungeons) were created in the late 90s what made online gaming more popular. When this started this is when online games such as Mario Bros, Tetris and ping pong started. Online games were created to entertain people however most games are designed for a certain purpose such as to inform, persuade or stimulate.
Podcasts were created in 2004 by Adam Curry and Dave Winer. In 2005 Yahoo launched a podcasts site where you could subscribe and listen. Podcasts were created to gather information and to education people.
Apps were created in July 2008, a year after the first ever iphone was released. It had over 500 apps. The first ever iphone game was called ‘Lights Off’ by Lucas Newman and Adam Betts in 2007. Apps were invented to educate and inform people especially people who wanted to educate themselves as apps was a good way to increase people's educational needs.
