The Nature Of What Is Real

Before a person is capable of bringing forth a theory about the nature of reality, first they must ask themselves, what is reality? What is their perception of it? Is it what they see, smell, what they touch? Is it what they remember and think about, or is it maybe all of those, or even none of them?

The nature of what is real has been a significant question that world philosophers have been struggling with even before the question itself was asked. Even in the modern age, all we can do about it is wonder and theorize. We can take anything we want into consideration with our theory, be it our surroundings, the people in our life, or even the depths of our own mind. It’s hard to settle on just one main point and think it over again and again, trying to make some sense out of the world.

I like to think that what I see is real. It’s there. I dislike the thought that there is someone else in charge of my life, telling me what to feel, telling me what to write in this document. My mind and life are unique, they are my own. Everything I see and feel is there, but it’s up to me to interpret it. Maybe there is a higher force watching over everything, God or not, but I refuse to believe it is in control of my life. I don’t think things happen randomly, generated by an algorithm, I think each and every event, fortunate or unfortunate, has meaning and builds me as a person. I build my own consciousness through experiencing the world around me, receiving information from it and processing it in my own way, making choices based on them, building my own way up all the way to this point. I’m guessing then, I could say I also believe in the butterfly effect theory.

I am given a choice, I make it, and it makes a difference that affects my future. But I am the one who made the choice, I was not told to do it. I do not believe in gods or algorithms or evil geniuses pulling a veil over my eyes and calling that veil a reality, because if that’s what reality is, I’d really rather not be a part of it. I, as well as every other human being, am in charge of shaping my own reality.
