Macbeth: The Power Of Scotland's Monarchy

To start with, in Macbeth the three witches create a monstrous human, they do this by telling him (Macbeth) about his future knowing the events that will potentially create the downfall of Macbeth himself, then kills his best friend, Banquo; and tries to harm his son Fleance, because the witches start to tell Macbeth he, was a threat to the throne, “No son of mine succeeding. If’t be so, For Banquo’s issue have I filed my mind” He would do anything he felt was necessary to get rid of all threats he felt the need to chastise (3. 1. 63-64). Macbeth would do whatever it took to keep the throne which was the cause of a series of unfortunate events, such as seeing the ghost of Banquo at a dinner which tarries his mind more than once and led to his downfall (Jaramillo). In addition, Macbeth is bad luck and contagious, this is a symbol because when he became King of Scotland things went downhill, “As she is troubled with thick coming fancies, that keep her from rest. Cure her of that. Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased” Macbeth prepares for war with Macduff, Lady Macbeth catches a disease just as if she was the wife of King James, Macbeth kills everyone around him intentionally or unintentionally, when she dies, he becomes desolate (5. 3. 37-40).

Following that, Macbeth was not the only one who wanted power along with control, Lady Macbeth had evil intentions the moment Macbeth sent her a letter, “unsex me here, / And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty…That no compunctious visitings of nature / Shake my fell purpose” (1. 5. 39-44). She calls upon the witches to take away her feminine qualities, and her conscience, so that she will be able to commit murder. This is why it became easy for her to persuade Macbeth. The Macbeth’s the continue on to have dinner with Duncan, which serves to be an easy way to plot yet murder him, “Hath borne his faculties [royal powers] so meek, hath been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels”, Macbeth has a moment where he starts to tell himself how good of a king Duncan is (1. 7. 17-18). Meanwhile, again Lady Macbeth tells him he will not be a man if he cannot commit murder intentionally when he does so on the war field.

Following that, the role of the monarch undertakes representational and constitutional duties which gives Duncan, Macbeth or any other king the right to run Scotland they way the think is right, “ In the play Duncan is portrayed as a strong, wise and elderly king whereas in reality he was a young, weak and ineffective ruler” having a role in monarchy impedes on the current king simply because you have expectations to live up to not only family wise but country or city wise to your people and everyone is always watching you (Johnson).

“Respected for his strong leadership qualities, Macbeth was a wise king who ruled successfully for 17 years” the real Macbeth is well respected while Shakespeare’s Macbeth is despised (Johnson).
