The Relevance of Mulan to Modern Society
Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies because its the first one where the girl (disguised as a guy) fights for her family. She doesn't go to a ball to win the guys affection as most of the other stories seem to teach, she does what feels true to her, even though it shames her family. I've learned so many things from Mulan over the years and it has taught us some valuable lessons, such as honor, standing up for what you believe in, never doubting yourself, and many more things. Based on a traditional Chinese legend, Mulan is a must-see film for not only, its an amazing rating of 4/5 stars but because in everything from its imagery to its humor even its music, it never gets old no matter how many times you watch it.
The movie Mulan is about honor, this is showed very clearly as she disguises herself as a man and takes her fathers place to fight for her country, as her father was not able to as he had been injured. Mulan was expected to bring honor to her family by learning the simple things every woman is meant to know, like how to tighten her dress to make her body slim, pour tea, how to do makeup and how to dress and walk like a lady so that she could marry a man of high social status, but instead, Mulan brings honor to the country and achieves an award from the emperor.
Mulan teaches the importance of not being like everyone else, this movie shows that we were born to stand out and in doing so this brings honor not just to our family but to our selves, by knowing who we are and what our purpose in life is we can do anything we set our minds to. There are many life lessons that I have realized from this movie, I picked 4 of them to incorporate in this essay.
Firstly, accepting others is the main lesson I learned this shows from the numerous acts of acceptance towards everyone she encounters, she is kind yet does not let anyone downgrade her.
Secondly, you are stronger than what you think you are. It may sound like one of those corny lines but it's true, strength is something that comes true even when you're at your lowest point. When Mulan was about to give up, she found herself saving the general and becoming the most celebrated warrior in her camp.
Thirdly, always follow your heart. Nothing is more powerful and honest than following your heart and being true to yourself. Lastly, Family is the most important. Mulan risked her life and snuck into the army to save her father's life, disguised as a man. She knew that this would come with consequences and could be punishable by death, but she continued to persevere. The courage and devotion she has towards her father and his well being are quite memorable.
In conclusion to this essay, I believe Mulan is still relevant in 2019 due to the important life lessons mentioned in the above paragraphs also teaching the younger generation about the importance of women's rights and equality. The reason I believe that this movie is relevant today is due to the amount of gender disgraced around Mulan wanting to fight a war that was only populated by men.
