The Review On The Book Divergent

The book, Divergent “ by Veronica Roth” is set in Chicago, but a future dystopian version of Chicago. The protagonist is Beatrice Prior, a young sixteen- year- old girl from Abnegation. People are divided into different factions based on how well they scored in the virtual test These five factions are: Candor, Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity. All of these factions takes place in different cities in Chicago. The novel begins with Beatrice Prior worrying about taking her aptitude test, since the aptitude test would show her what faction is best suited for her.

The story is written through the eyes of Beatrice Prior who is later known as Tris. Tris deeply narrates the story, explaining in detail about how divided her city is and how she struggles to hide who she really is without being a target towards society. Tris doesn't only explains how she struggles throughout her journey, but also explains changes she had to make to forget about her past.

Beatrice is a very brave, smart and selfless person, even though she had to leave her mother, father and brother behind she never let her head down in any situation even though she misses her family. Tris does not let her being divergent stop her at what she wants to do.

Tris Prior is a young sixteen-year-old that was formerly from Abnegation, but now is a newly transferred dauntless. Despite her being divergent, she never let that affect her standing up for people or doing what's right, in the book it states, ‘any idiot can stand in front of a target,’ I say,’ ‘It doesn’t prove anything except that your bullying us, which I recall is a sign of cowardice’ ( Roth 160-163). When she stands up for Al it shows that she is courageous and brave. Tris is willing to stand up for a stranger and help them no matter what kind of situation it is.

From the way you see Tris behave, you can already tell that she is getting more comfortable in her new factions and her new friends, even though she had a few enemies on the way that despised her and tried to kill her, in the book it states, “lift her up c’mon.” I gasp and cough and claw at the back of my head. someone grabs a handful of my hair and slammed my head against something hard. A scream of pain burst from my mouth, and I feel dizzy’. ( Roth 278-281). After that attack Tris kept her head up high and did not let that affect her training and her attitude. She looked one of her attackers in the eye and confronted them, in the book it shows, “stay away from me,'' I say quietly. My body feels rigid and cold, and I am not angry, I am not hurt, I am nothing. I say, my voice low, “never come near me again.” our eyes meet. “If you do, I swear to God I will kill you,” I say. “You coward (Roth299-300) .

The story takes place in a future dystopian chicago. Around that time Chicago is destroyed and people are put into faction based on a virtual test that they had to take and if they do not fit in any factions they will become faction less. The story was based on a dystopian fiction, but that does not mean that many people in different parts of the world arrest judge off the way they act or their personalities.

The audience Roth was talking to is very obvious. She is writing to the reader. She is talking whomever is reading the book, but mostly wants to reach out to the teenagers that are out their and are afraid to show who they really are.

I believe the author's purpose for writing the book is to show how you should choose who you want to be and not let other people choose your identity and also don’t let your fears take the best of you. Tris was not afraid to say that she was divergent because being divergent is part of her.

The main idea of divergent are family, identity. These three ideas are the main focus for divergent, family is a major factor for divergent because tris had a choice to leave her family and never see them or stay with her family, she struggled with the thought of not seeing her mother, father and older brother forever. In divergent tris renewed herself and became a new person with a fresh start at dauntless, “beatrice” just doesn't sound right anymore. A new place, a new name. I can be remade here. “Tris” i say firmly. This shows us that Tris is ready for a new fresh start at her new faction and doesn't want to be reminded of her old faction.

The tone or mood of divergent is very suspenseful, fear, romance, and betrayal. The story opens up with the city split up and young teenagers making decisions on what the next chapter in their life.there is alot of fear in people's eyes not knowing what is going to happen next to them, many people throughout the book lost homes because they did not fit in any factions. There was a lot of romance between tris and four. In the beginning of the book four was hard on tris but at the same time was in love with her they grew closer and ended up together. This book makes me feel close with the character tris because she’s been through alot but never stop fighting and fight for her freedom in being divergent. I can relate to tris because when growing up, I struggled a lot with who I wanted to be and let other people decide for me and that had me confused a lot, but now I do not let other people determine who I am and how I act, that's my job to do.

I would highly recommend this book to 9-12 graders because it is very appealing and tell a story about a young teenage girl making difficult decisions, tris knows how important family is but she shows us that sometimes you have to leave what's important to you, and find out who you really are as a person.
