The Role of England and Spain in Discovering New World
Spain had arrived and discovered the New World but England benefited more. England was very involved in the New World, they defeated people for their land and explored more than others.
English victory win was over Spain’s leader, King Philip II. In 1588, a large military group, the Spanish Armada was sent to attack the English when they had settled at Jamestown in Virginia. Spain was destroyed and lost power, the English had established their first official colony in Jamestown the year of 1607. As the English settled in Jamestown, they realized they need the help of women and Indians. The English were taught to grow beans, pumpkins, vegetables and corn with the extent of hunting and fishing. The English had developed a strong self-defense protection to gain respect and create a sense of fear for their enemies to gain a colony. Also, gaining a friendship with the Indians within the New World can provided resources, trade and protection. Jamestown was the perfect place for the English because it opened great benefits to them.
In 1612, Jamestown was governed by Lord De La Warr and more people were immigrating to Jamestown. In their time of arrival, they found tobacco which is a popular crop. There was a demand for labor and to convince people the Virginia Company created the headright system. The system gave the people fifty-acre grants of the field and would persuade families with extra land. Then, if a person paid to immigrate to Jamestown would be given much more land. The tobacco had provided a great deal of income for the town, bring more value to the English. The Virginia Company had expanded the Jamestown colony for the English. In 1619, there was an increase in women that immigrated for the men and there was also ironworkers and crafts workers. The number of laborers and women on July 30th the communities established the House of Burgesses. The colony was developing a strong economy and leadership for the people, demonstrated the growth in their colony.
New England was supporting more exploration within the New World. In 1639, New Hampshire and Maine were discovered by two English religious men. Ten years later the disciple of Anne Hutchinson, John Wheelwright had led a few people to New Hampshire. In 1679, New Hampshire was known as a separate colony. This was not a part of Massachusetts as the religion of New Hampshire and Maine was interrupted the peace. As English explores expanded in the New World and there was potential in the state England would support. The idea was to expand as much as possible and take over, when new regulations are created less people could have demands and England would be more powerful.
The English over the years had conflict with the Indians. In 1637, the Pequot Indians were upset as the English had took their land and people. The King Philip’s War in 1675, led by Metacomet part of the Wampanoag tribe, lasted three years. The tribe killed many people from the Massachusetts village, which ended with the English getting help from Mohawk allies. Metacomet was murdered and the tribe felt defeated. The English gained more territory and power, another win and land can only benefit the colony.
The English expansion is extremely uncontrollable at this point. Start of their journey for land was a difficult task but as soon as they established one land and made friendships for their benefit gave them a disadvantage. Also, while one colony was developing another one would be discovered. English used their resources and developed a strong foundation to expand. They took the time to understand that not only was labors important, but the well-being of the laborers, sent women to care for the men. The English worked together and were supported by New England to develop strong colonies. England had been very fortunate in their journey of battle and expanding their colonies around the New World, using resources around them. When England defeated Spain there was a clear answer that England had an opportunity to be more successful than Spain.
