The Role Of Slackers In Understanding The Meaning Of Work
People in today work very differently than past, we meet struggles with such questions like what is the purpose of work? According to Tom Lutz, he pointed out the meaning of work and how people today view the value of our jobs. Lutz compared his own experiences with his son Cody. He found himself angry about Cody when he was doing nothing and lying on the couch, and he compared his problem with our modern work ethic.
Lutz expects that Cody might explore his interest from the time instead of doing nothing on the couch, there are many people in the society are doing the same thing like Cody. They being lazy on their work and sitting there for hours but still get the paid like others, that’s why we all hate those slackers at workplace. Lutz calls the slacker as the “necessary twin” of the model American work ethic. Slackers become an important stage to change our understanding of work, once the work ethic changed workers will love to work in order to reach their achievement.
People who work and help with our industry can get pay from their works, but there is also some kind of “slackers” like Cody who doing nothing, as today’s world we always get angry about those “slackers” and made us wondering the real value of hard working. People who were lazy on their job made us angry and complain about their laziness because we see the unfair effort on works. Lutz had talked about his anger of Cody being a couch potato, he was confused about his anger and start to ask himself what made him being so angry about Cody? He first comes out with an exception to his son, he wants him to doing something meaningful instead of lying on the living room couch eating and absorbing TV.
Just like every parent Lutz doesn’t want to see his son being a slacker, he wants him to do something meaningful like a “job”. Cody reminds Lutz’s early age, he remembered how he took a break like Cody and found what he really wants to do during those two years, so he expects Cody can doing something like him and that expectation made his anger. From his story we can tell the gap between each generation caused the different understanding of work ethic, and we experienced this kind of theory as a feeling. Lutz found his own twisted relation to work from Cody’s action and know that the work ethic is different than past, the connection between workers and jobs had changed we now have a different view of jobs.
Cody made Lutz start thinking the real meaning of the work. He understands that people get angry about slackers because they felt unfair about their effort on the job, so they will start thinking about the real meaning of their works like Lutz. Workers see purposeless as slackers, they found out that job is not only to provide your life needs but also is an important stage that can improve ourselves with a specific purpose. Like how Lutz understand the differences of work ethic from his son Cody, without these slackers workers might just keep work without the real purpose until they die. We mad about “slackers” but also learn the new understanding of what we are doing from them, “slackers” help workers find the purpose of their job and improve themselves at the same time.
Slackers seen as an important stage for workers to understand the meaning of work, they remind us why we work and what can we get from our job. Most of us forgot the real purpose of working, we work from day till night and repeating every day until the break. In the novel “Doing Nothing” Lutz believes that “anti-slackers can point to actual work they have had to do because coworkers were not pulling their own weight”. These slackers help those hard workers understand the meaning of work and motivate themselves to achieve their purpose. Workers start to realize that we are not only working to get pay but also improve their ability during the jobs. We know our position and made our motivation start again.
I believe that while they realize how important that the job is then working will become such a meaningful work to do, workers won’t hate their job anymore instead they will love their job. For example, if you choose to be a doctor because you think that is a “wealthy” job to do, will you love to be a doctor? Probably not, you will lose your motivation during the work because you don’t love your job. So workers change their view of jobs like Lutz, he realized when he was taking the break like Cody he found something that he really likes to do and start working for it to become a writer. He understands that “slacker” is just a stage that we need to go through to understand the real meaning of work, they help with our motivation for the job.
While we are working we are also improving our ability to live and that’s how we find the joy from our job and become love to work. Slackers remind us we are not only working for pay, workers need to know why we work and love our job in order to improve our motivation and the passion of work. It’s possible to work something that you will like and still get paid, but almost everyone works for money, not for their dream. Hard workers start to complain about those slackers because they felt unfair that those slackers can live without job’s pressure, but they also understand the meaning of work from slackers. It’s important that to having slack workers around us, they play an important role to help with our work ethic. We love and hate our job at the same time, but once we understand the meaning of work then jobs are not an annoying work anymore.
