The Standards Of Beautiful Face
Physical attractiveness is a controversial ideology that looks at the physical features and traits of individuals that may appear aesthetically pleasing to one’s eyes. It could be a major deciding factor when interviewing for jobs where the applicants are as adequately qualified as you, or when finding your special someone.
One’s attractiveness could be measured and analysed objectively and subjectively. According to Professor Godfrey Chan (referring to his presentation), the standard of beauty could be objectively defined using the “Golden Ratio, ” which can determine whether one’s face is ideally beautiful based on a divine proportion of 1 to 1. 618. In other words, everyone’s faces are ideal and aesthetically beautiful as long as their facial attributes align with the golden ratio. What is more, people’s faces that correlate to the divine proportion (originally proposed by Leonardo Da Vinci) is said to possess the feeling of self-worth, confidence and a boost in their quality of life and health.
From my experience, I used to have crooked teeth during my childhood until I got braces, which caused me to smile less, fearing that others may make fun of me. It seems like I deviated from the Golden ratio, inducing a feeling of low self-esteem, low confidence, and depression. In addition, attractiveness could be analysed subjectively due to factors such as, culture, time, and environmental factors. There are many different popular body images of attractive men that varies across countries. In Canada, most women prefer men with a masculine, healthy and boulder-like physique whereas in Korea, some women favour men who has a bowl-cut hairstyle like K-pop stars, glass-like skin and a slim physique. In addition, perception of physical attractiveness is continually altered to meet changing societal trends. Men in the 1940’s typically wore formal attires to go about their everyday which were deemed attractive, meanwhile, millennials think minimalistic causal street wear is more attractive. Lastly, physical features could be altered based on where one lives. For instance, unclean and poor air circulation in Hong Kong could cause some people to be develop acne and other traits to deviate from the ideal proportion.
Lastly, we can generalize parameters of a beautiful face. Someone with clear skin, symmetrical facial features, and has a face close to an “average” face would appear more attractive. Although physical attractiveness can be defined objectively and subjectively, beauty is cultural and timeless, and it constantly changes with our diet, genetics, and environmental factors.
