The Third Person In The Trinity
The Holy Spirit is the least understood of the three personalities that made the Trinity. Over the ages, people have used different things to describe him, like; force, ghost, feeling, etc. While some of these descriptions may give us an idea of the Holy Spirit, he is more than all of them combined.
The Holy Spirit is one of three persons in the Trinity. In His relationship with man and to carry out His ultimate plans in creation, God reveals Himself as three personalities: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This does not indicate that God is three because the three personalities of the Trinity are one, so God is one. This is a mystery that many people have contested over the ages, though it is well established in the Bible.
The Holy Spirit and God the Father are one, just as God the Son is one with the two personalities. He is not a force or feeling, but a person who has feelings; he can get angry or sad and be grieved, insulted, and blasphemed. “Wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven unto men.”
Jesus told the Jews who tried to attribute the power he was using to cast out demons to Beelzebub that their claims can make the Holy Spirit get angry, and by that, they will not be forgiven no matter how they tried to get forgiveness. The Bible also tells us that the Holy Spirit has intentions, shows willfulness, loves, communicates, teaches, and prays. These are all activities that can only be carried out by a person. “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
When God was creating the earth, the Spirit was present and actively participated in the exercise. “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” This tells us that the Holy Spirit had been on earth right from creation, working in the background, bringing God's plans and purpose to physical manifestation. He was also present during Jesus's earthly ministry. He announced him to the world when Jesus was coming out of river Jordan after John baptized him. The Spirit came upon him in the form of a dove, and God the Father spoke from heaven, 'This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.'
Jesus promised his disciples that after he departs from earth, he will ask the Father to send the Spirit down to earth as the comforter who will help them carry out the ministry work God had committed to their hands. That promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit came down in the form of tongues of fire and sat upon every person present in the upper room where they were praying. He made them bold and gave them the power to perform miracles, signs, and wonders.
