Reasons And Effects Of Divorce

The topic i have chosen to write this essay on is The Truth about Divorce. Most people think that people get divorced because they don't 'love' each other anymore but its alot more than that, it can be money issues, abuse, lack of communication, addiction and so on. Divorce is the legal ending of a marriage by a court. In this essay i will write about a few reasons for divorce and who it affects.

Here are some reasons why many couples get divorced:

Addiction

People can become addicted to various things, like drugs, sex, gambling, or alcohol. An addiction can ruin people's lives and its not just the person that has the addiction its the loved ones around them. As a person's addiction grows, they may lose their jobs, friends and even their marriage. Most people with an addiction have a change in behaviour that may not be healthy in a marriage, e.g people can be unfaithful, lie, steal, or completely change their lifestyle because of this. Thats why addiction makes the list of top reasons why couples divorce.

Age

A study published in Pennsylvania has showed that the age two people get married at can have a likely role in their divorce. People that get married at a young age often deal with problems like a lack of money, their not mature enough, they grow apart because they were young when they made the decision and they maybe didn't truly understand the commitment of marriage. At the same time age can add different experiences to the marriage. Through research it was found that people who marry later in life have the lowest divorce rates.

Unhappiness

Over the years people change, grow and develop. 55% of divorced couples grew apart during the years of their marriage. As the years pass people change, their interests or dreams may change and that may lead to the partners being incompatible as a result the marriage may start to fall apart. Incompatibility may also lead to the spouse getting bored and seeking interaction with another person.

Money

A recently published article has said that 'the husbands unemployment can be a key factor behind divorce'. Couples that have money problems usually deal with alot of stress which can make them argue alot and lose communication. Usually most couples control their spending together but in some cases there are spouses that like to spend more money or buy more expensive clothes, jewellery, products etc, this can lead to them disagreeing with each other and arguing. Finances make up the 40% of reason why people divorce.

Abuse

It can be physical, emotional, verbal or mental abuse, all are common reasons why couples get divorced. Physical or verbal fighting is not healthy in any relationship. If a marriage does lead to any sort of abuse many spouses reach a breaking point and seek divorce. Staying married to an abusive spouse is not healthy or safe, but counselling can maybe help make a change or get help within the marriage.

Usually a divorce starts with one of the spouses filing for a divorce and then you wait for your paperwork to be approved. If you have any children you need to sort out paperwork for who will take care of them, you need to divide your money and property. If you agree about children, money, property and the reasons for the divorce the you can usually avoid going to a court hearing.

When children are involved it is hard. Especially when they're young because if its an issue like abuse or addiction, children wont really understand what it means. So it may mean that the child or children will get upset and it will be harder to work out who they stay with or who they visit on certain days.

In my opinion you shouldn't get married or have children until your sure that its going to last, even thought you may thats its 'going to be fun' you need to think about the responsibilities that are included with your decisions because its not just hurting your loved ones its also that the process of getting a divorce can take a long time, especially when boths spouses don't agree on the terms.

In conclusion divorce brings alot of effect on children emotionally, financially, psychologically and the effects may be long term. Couples that have problems within their marriages should try all things possible to try and make their relationship work especially the couples with children.
