The Ups and Downs That Shaped My Leadership Style
As I have expressed an interest in the position of Supervisor, Membership Administration I need write “Describe your leadership experience” sample essay in approximately 500 words and define high/low points in my experience have influenced my leadership style.
The foundation of my formal leadership experience began in the summer of 1999. Early in leadership, I was developed under a Theory X leadership style which was fairly traditional and common among leaders. Often, fear had to be instilled in order to get one to accomplish their tasks. The mindset was that an employee who is given an inch will take a mile. Being a Theory X leader eventually led me realize that I was the one who was in fear. In fear of losing control, lacking trust and prohibiting creativity and empowerment. Although my earlier years of leadership revealed my lowest points, I have a greater appreciation for the skills I currently possess.
Formal education ultimately changed my leadership style from Theory X leader to a Theory Y leader. Formal education allowed me to realize that I didn’t have to adopt the leadership style of my current leader, but implement the skillset I possess, such as sacrifice, inspiration, and motivation. My current leadership style is a healthy balance of servant leadership and the bottom line. My servant leadership abilities has been fueled by my ambition for education which infiltrates into the area of developing employees to succeed. Employees need to see what I call the four “C’s” which are communication, character, competency, commitment. When employees have confidence in their leaders, obtaining the bottom line goals is easier to navigate.
My leadership style is driven by the legacy I would like to leave which is to impact the lives of individuals in a positive manner. I discovered that leading was never about me, but the ones you lead. Each team is made up of individuals who possess unique skills that must be tapped into for the best results. I have a tendency to see individuals for their potential and what they can accomplish even when they lack confidence. My biggest fear is not doing everything in my power to encourage them to be the best they can possibly be and they don’t reach their goals.
In conclusion, the growing pains of leadership allowed me to visualize my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. Over time, I have discovered that patience is a virtue and success doesn’t happen overnight. The reason we have erasers on pencils is that when we make an error, we can erase and correct. I’ve learned to seek clarity, trust others to do well, giving guidance, and setting the example. Lastly, my leadership style reflects the desire to make a difference.
