There Will Come Soft Rain By Ray Bradbury: Advantages Of Advanced Technology
The following story will be based on a short story ‘There Will Come Soft Rain’. The story is about an autonomous house that is seen by the writer in future. The writer sees this world as a dead world, as everything in this world is unhuman. In the past, the writer saw some potential in the development of technology from human that might be a helpful or deadly. This fiction rose some ideas on engineers and other career fields that are involved in the design of robots. Most activities that occurs in the story take place independent of human help as this is a lonely world. According to Charles Darwin evolution takes place with time. As the environment changes, the organisms also changes. The reason for that to occur is because the nature selects the fittest organism that in turn needs adaptation.
The story “There Will Come A Soft Rain” talks about the advanced technology as the content of the story is personified. Things that define life are time, history and memories. The question comes what are the advantages and disadvantages of this technological advanced world? In the opening of the story, the clock reminds us of time and the events that should be taking place as it says “tick-tock, seven o’clock, time to get up”. This awakens the fact that elders and teenagers sometimes need to be reminded and rises an advantage of the singing clock. Most of the humans are lazy to wake up on the mornings because of procrastinating as we proceed with the story, the stove in this house can function by its self-given as it is cooking breakfast by its self. In future time that could be very much useful as we spend a lot of our time cooking. Development of this kind could come in hand as we tend to buy fast food instead of homemade food and we will no longer spend time in cooking. When the second voice says ‘today is 4 August 2026’ gives us every detail about the date.
It proceeds by repeating the date three times for memory sake, as a matter of fact the paragraph is all about memories as it reminds us that its someone’s birthday, anniversary and that there are bills to be paid. I credit this as an advantage of advanced technology because of the activities that it performs. In the past we couldn’t predict the weather conditions as we didn’t have a device that could precisely measure the temperatures or inform us about the climate changes. Now we find the weather box shouting that there is a rain outside. This is a very much useful tool as we could always be updated to weather changes that are taking place outside in time thus we can always predict weather changes and prepare what to wear before going out. These update steel gives us an advantage of the future coming inventions. Most of the times we tend to be tired as many activities needs to be done by us with our own hands. The line ‘the dirty dishes where dropped in to a hot washer and emerged twinkling dry’ tells us a decrease of hand washing the dishes and the time consumed within the process. This therefore can be classified as an advantage within future technological development Technology becomes more advanced as there are mice that clean the house as it gets dirty, of which is an unusual concept in our daily lives. This wants us to dig deep into the river beads and bring our memories in order to remember our past that we were using our hands to clean the house but now we are becoming more lazy as most of the things. We find isolation in this room as there's no one in this house from the line 'the house stood alone by in the city of rubble and ashes'. That intern opens some kind of view as lonely house is mostly known as a ghost town. This is kind of a strange situation, why there should be a house that is more technological updated and be there by its self? That it gives us a disadvantage as this might be telling us that humanity is totally erased through the introduction of machine.
Also in the same lonely room there are pictures that closely reminds us of death in japan caused by Hiroshima as it is believed that the shadow of a person died through a bomb attack will remain on the walls. I believe that the children who were playing with the ball and their parents were bombed by their technology and died. This explains how they are becoming extinct and falls on the disadvantages of this development as there is no one to control them even though they function as human. The writer also gets to see the future as there will be tight security as it will require passwords and identities. That being said brings some spark on my mind that we all want to be safe and secured in this world full of gangsters and thugs, the writer mentions the other way to unlock the password will be the voice recognition device that one cannot forge. This upgrade comes with safety in time and that comes as an advantage. One thing that gives me runny stomach is the fact that there will be no one to give help to the animals like pets as human kind seems to be distinct through their creation of bombs and the robots. The fact that human beings won’t be around, erases remorse and love for the nature through the line ‘The dog ran upstairs, hysterically yelping to each door, at last realizing, as the house realized, that only silence was here’ thus this belongs to the disadvantages of the upgrade to this world. Life is joyful and exciting when you have something to take your mind of to like playing tennis table, playing pool and playing cards, but the big problem starts when the game ends. Who will vacate the table tennis and place things to their original place?, that question is answered here as to the story as we find that tables folded themselves. Such automatically responses helps us to do thing much easier and cheaper time.
The other thing that human loves is paying once and the object that you bought works for you till ever. Now imagine coming back home tired and stressed by your boss, and there’s your child requiring you to read a story for him/her. How tiring is that?, that’s where you say things that you shouldn’t have said to your child. Now imagine getting a robot that will do the job for you and you leave a happy life with your kids When there’s no human natural disasters begin to take place as ‘the house began to die’. No one has the chance to take wise decisions as everything in the house is programed to do one thing. As the fire got out of hand all they could do is shout ‘fire!’ and the fire spread out instantly. Everything ran in panic which gives them weakness and disadvantages. These instances gives us a birds view as we observe the writers memories that after all the joy that we will get from our creation, at the end they will tend to destroy the same house that they were guarding. As in the story the objects are personified as dying human also the fire is seen as a smart thing because of penetrating through tiny holes. The vision about the story gives an idea about the development towards the future. Back in the days we used our energy to invent something but as the scientists and engineers started being curious. The writer began to imagine the work that engineers could achieve in time because of the needs of human kind. In relation to time, memories and history, the writer foresees the future of the city of Allandale in California. As the story progresses we find advantages and disadvantages of this development in time.
In my analysis I found advantages to be more interesting as less amount of time will be spent using physical muscles. Civilization comes with safety, excessive time with family. I would say it is good to have a well-developed apartment if it has such useful things but extinction of human value is not a good thing as after losing them there’s a great disruption. That being said technology should be held responsible in the presence of humans and other animals because biodiversity is one thing that keeps planet earth.
